Job well done!
Major kudos go out to all who made the 2013 Ohio State Little League Tournament held right here in Ashtabula such a success.
Despite Mother Nature’s best (worst?) efforts, the hard-working crew from these parts proved to be quite a winning team for those of us who reside, or in my case, work here.
The young men, the coaches and fans of all 11 teams in the event were treated to tremendous hospitality and, despite the aforementioned issues with inclement weather, venerable Cederquist Park’s star was shining from kickoff to curtain drop of the event.
Congratulations to not only the championship team from Hamilton that slugged its way past New Albany in the championship round Sunday, but to all the youngsters, coaches and their families who were in attendance here during the past week.
And major props to our own home team, who did us all proud by not only how the tournament was run and conducted and how the fields were always ready to go, but more importantly, for their attitudes and demeanors.
Our team (including our own Rich Kelly, Bob Ettinger, Michael Shaffer, Angelo Velotta and, of course, Warren Dillaway) didn’t forget the golden rule of youth amateur sports — positive attitudes and friendly smiles are always free.
Yours truly was saddened to learn of the passing of Lucille Donley last night.
I had the pleasure of working with Lucille during my almost-28 years, now, here at the Star Beacon, and also during my six-year tenure, covering two different stops, at The Gazette in Jefferson.
Lucille was a pro’s pro when it came to the newspaper business.
She had a million contacts. Everyone knew Lucille. And Lucille knew everyone.
And, though I always thought so, Lucille didn’t know everyone or everything.
It just seemed that way.
Despite severe health issues, which she dealt with pretty much throughout the years I knew her, I can’t recall a singular time when Lucille either used them as an excuse.
I used to ask her question after question, especially during my younger days, and Lucille always made it a point to say, “Now, Don, have you thought about it this way?”
I am now, Lucille. Thank you... and God bless.
