A Don McCormack column: All hoops, all day long at Conneaut

Paying a visit to the variety store...

Marathon men

If basketball is your game, and if you happen to live in Spartan Country, Tim Tallbacka and his band of boys basketeers have something that should be a slam dunk for you.

The fourth annual Conneaut Basketball Program Marathon Open Gym will be staged Saturday at the Conneaut Middle School gymnasium.

Players in grades 5 through 8 are welcome and will take to the floor from 10 a.m. to noon. From that point through 4 p.m., all other players in grades 9 and up will hit the hardwood.

Cost is $5 for players and $2 for spectators and all proceeds will benefit the Conneaut Boys Basketball Bench Club. The organization raises money to benefit the Conneaut boys basketball squads.

It should be noted, any players under the age of 18 who wish to participate who do not play for Conneaut’s school teams must have a parent in attendance to sign required waiver forms.

Anyone needing more information or having questions can call Tallbacka, himself a former standout at Harbor High School and Hiram College, at 655-8569.

Picture this

Yours truly is continuing his quest for any type of photograph that depicts the baseball diamond that at one time stood in the infield of the racetrack at the Ashtabula County Fairgrounds.

I’ve received several messages, read many newspaper accounts of the games being played there and have had numerous conversations about those contests, but my eyes have yet to see any type of photograph taken from even the slightest of wide angles that shows how the ballfield was laid out.

For decades, every town in Ashtabula County would put together a baseball team for the tournament at the fair.

If you have such an image or know of one, please contact me at the email address that appears below.
