Spire a hive of activity this weekend

Big East Indoor Track Meet, AAU National Gymnastics Meet being staged simultaneously

— It will be a busy few stays at the Spire Institute in Harpersfield Township this weekend.

With the Big East Indoor Track and Field Championships slated for Saturday (9 a.m. to 9 p.m) and Sunday (same times), a practice day will be on tap at the facility today from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

On Satuday and Sunday, the AAU Nationals Gymnastics Meet will be held, competition running from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.

Finally, Premier Club Soccer League play will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday and 9:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Sunday.


More than 520 athletes and their families, along with more than 75 coaches and 23 judges, will be in the area for the  AAU Gymnastics Winter National Championships.

This event is one of AAU’s three national gymnastics championships, and attracts top gymnasts from all over the country.

Athletes will be competing in 16 skill levels and 55 age group divisions as they vie for individual event, all around and team honors.  

Ronald Ferris of Austintown, the National Chair of AAU Gymnastics and a member of the USA Gymnastics board of directors, will serve as the meet director.

The first session begins Saturday morning with the athletes marching into the arena at 8:45.

Action continues throughout the weekend with an afternoon session on Saturday and both morning and afternoon sessions on Sunday.
