Heralds take it on chin

ASHTABULA — The New Day boys basketball team is bigger and far more experienced than St. John and that showed Friday night at Mahoney Gymnasium as the Golden Eagles dropped the Heralds, 78-14.

Despite the difference in size and score, the Heralds (1-9) were resilient.

“We are a bunch of freshmen playing varsity ball,” St. John coach Ryan Harco said. “When these guys are all juniors and seniors, we are going to be unstoppable. As freshmen, they are worried about missing shots.

“On defense, we’re doing a good job. We spent a whole week straight teaching boxing out. They are starting to come out of their shells. I am proud of the younger guys. They keep working hard. It’s tough. I know where we’re at, but we will have this group for four years.”

The Eagles (6-5) swarmed the Heralds with defense, causing 51 turnovers, leading to a plethorda of easy layups.

“We try to pressure the ball, deny the ball and apply pressure in the forecourt,” New Day assistant coach Joshua James said. “Our offense (is about) giving everyone a chance on the wing, and good ballhandling,” he added.

Dennis Valerio led the way with 15 points and six steals for the Eagles.

“My teammates (were the reason I scored so much),” he said. “The goal is good rotation, move your feet.”

Jeremiah Moore scored 14 points and also got had steals for the and Justin Davidson scored 14 points.

For the Heralds, Zach Taylor scored eight points.
