GV gets it done!

Mustangs earn 1st title since ’97 by lassoing Ledgemont

ORWELL — On Friday night against Ledgemont, Grand Valley was looking for its first conference crown since 1997, when the Mustangs won the ESC under Jim Henson now an assistant at Edinboro University.

Sometimes championships are won when no one but yourselves expects you to do so. There have been many great teams and individuals over the years when talking about the of history Grand Valley football.

Well, the Mustangs had the mix of the right chemistry, lofty goals and a little luck this season as GV supplanted two-time defending Northeastern Athletic Conference king pin, the Ledgemont Redskins 21-6 at Grand Valley Stadium.

The Mustangs put on a defensive clinic, holding the Redskins to negative-2 yards rushing and 137 in the air while sacking the Ledgemont quarterback eight times. The Mustangs harassed, punished, and blew by and won the battle up front and in particular junior linebacker Jason Hart and a host of his associates.

“Well it’s been since ’97 and it’s incredible,” said jubilant first-year coach John Glavickas. “They have never given up and just have been playing, playing, and playing. They all just play their roles and there is not a selfish kid on this whole team.

“We always knew that Jason Hart could be some kind of player for us. He turned it up a notch and we didn’t even have to stunt with him going in there. The defense just played great. The kids executed the game plan beautifully.”

“They played very well tonight,” Ledgemont coach Joe LaRosa said. “I knew it was going to be a dog fight. It was a dog fight all the way to halftime and the third. Hats off to them and coach.  I was glad to see that they played very well. No. 35 (Stanley Sirrine) is a real stud and a very good ball player. We just

  • Don A Don McCormack column: ‘Kids’ stuff’ spurs great responses

I’m often caught more than a bit off-guard by what stories, features or columns generate responses from you, Loyal Readers, much more so than those who do not.
For example, the column that appeared in this space a couple of days ago regarding things yours truly and my buddies did as kids prompted more than a few responses.
A sampling, many of which were posted on my Facebook page:

  • Olivia In transition

Pymatuning Valley graduate Olivia Holt had a distinct reason she chose to play basketball for Mount Union.
“They do have tradition,” Holt, the daughter of Gus and Michelle Holt, said. “I’m from PV. We had a tradition of winning and working hard there. I wanted to go somewhere that tradition mattered. I knew I was going to get better by coming here.”

Paying a Wednesday morning visit to the variety store...

    Think spring?
If this, um, err, uh... spring... feels a bit unusual for high school baseball and softball teams in Northeast Ohio, it is, to a point.
