Thanks to Mother Nature, Eleshia Pitcher and her Geneva Eagles were forced to wait one more day to play for a Division II district softball championship... at least one more day, that is.
The second-seeded Eagles (20-2) were set to take on top-seeded Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin in the title game at the JAGS Complex before the rains came and brought that idea to a conclusion.
“We were ready to go at 1, then by 2, we were under water,” tournament director Rod Holmes said. “That was that.”
The inclement weather also washed out the two Division III district semifinals that were slated to be played Thursday.
Holmes, in his first season as honcho of the sectional-district after serving as assistant to Tim Mizer for years, laid out the new schedule for the contests.
“Now, Geneva and NDCL will play the Division II championship game (today) at 4:30,” he said. “(Today) at 2 p.m., the Division III semifinal between LaBrae and Gilmour Academy will be played, then we’ll come back at 4:30 with the other D-III semifinal between Champion and Kirtland.”
And what of the Division III district championship game between the winners of today’s semifinal matchups?
“We will play the Division III championship game on Saturday at 1 p.m.,” Holmes said.
Holmes said the LaBrae-Gilmour Academy game is set for 2 p.m. today because LaBrae has graduation ceremonies set for tonight.
“And the Gilmour people were fine with that, so it worked out just fine,” he said.
According to The Weather Channel, there is a 30-percent chance o rain through noon today, then zero-percent chance by 1 p.m. Temperatures are only expected to reach 54 degrees.
Saturday calls for zero-percent chance of rain, with a high temperature of 61.
