GV’s Hart is a Ringer

At 5-foot-9 and 170 pounds, he isn’t your normal-sized defensive end.

But, physical dimensions are no way to measure the size of a Hart, especially when it comes to Grand Valley’s Jason Hart.

The Mustang senior stripped a Pymatuning Valley ballcarrier of the football in the fourth quarter and scampered 86 yards for what proved to be the decisive score in Grand Valley’s 22-16 triumph in the annual battle between archrivals that was also for undisputed possession of first place in the Northeastern Athletic Conference.

For his efforts, Hart is the Week 8 Ringer Screen Print Ashtabula County Player of the Week.

He will receive a hooded sweatshirt, compliments of John Ringer, main man of Ringer Screen Print (and a former superstar for the Harbor Mariners), at the annual Ashtabula County Touchdown Club dinner and awards banquet on Dec. 9 at Our Lady of Peace (formerly Mount Carmel).

Hart’s honor makes it back-to-back weeks a Mustang has earned the award as teammate Jake Vormelker was the Week 7 honoree.

Other winners this season have been Aaron Rossi of Geneva in Week 1, Cole Erdel of Jefferson in Week 2, Tyler Loftus of Lakeside in Week 3, Troy Colucci of Conneaut in Week 4, Brandon Pakkala of Geneva in Week 5 and Anthonie Magda and Riis Smith of Edgewood in Week 6.

  • Complete performance

It has taken a while for the Grand Valley Mustangs to put it all together on the softball diamond this season. Wednesday afternoon, the Mustangs did just that, combining a superb pitching effort by Katie Paskey with a tight defense and opportune offense to smother the Maplewood Rockets, 8-1, in Northeastern Athletic Conference action.

  • Pirates sail past Eagles

The seniors on the Perry softball team wanted to talk with coach Frank Rico. They had some ideas for how their coach could help the Pirates. Rico was receptive of the players’ thoughts. It didn’t hurt that the Pirates were right on the mark in their assessments.

Geneva pole vaulter Ally Thompson is competing mostly with herself in the early going. She claimed a major victory in that category in toppling her own Ashtabula County record in the Eagles’ victories over Lakeside and Harvey at Spire on Wednesday.

  • Tribe bests Royals

The top of the Cleveland lineup has been starting to hit. If that continues, it will bode very well for the team.
