Gridiron news

Don’t look now, but the St. John Heralds are taking steps toward fielding a varsity football team again.

While the school will once again field junior high and junior varsity squads this fall, according to new athletic director Nick Iarocci, the Heralds will also be playing one varsity game in the upcoming season.

On Friday, Sept. 13, St. John will journey to Geauga County to challenge the Newbury Black Knights.

Newbury went 3-7 in the 2012 season, winning its first three games, then losing its final seven.

The contest will be the first varsity football game for the Heralds since the fall of 2008.

The last time Urban Meyer’s alma mater took the field for a varsity football game was on Friday, Oct. 17, 2008, when the school then known as SS. John and Paul dropped a 58-14 verdict to Pymatuning Valley at Laker Stadium.

The Heralds’ last varsity victory on the gridiron took place the week before, a 26-14 triumph against visiting Ledgemont, on Friday, Oct. 10, 2008.

What’s in a name?

Ever wonder what is the most popular nickname when it comes to high school sports?

Well, in the Buckeye State, one school in the Star Beacon coverage area shares the second-most popular mascot in the state.

Geneva is one of 35 schools in Ohio that uses Eagles as its mascot, tied for second most with Panthers.

Here’s how the other Ohio High School Athletic Association member schools in our coverage area stand in regards to the frequency of their respective mascots:

The most popular school mascot in Ohio?

Tigers, which is used by 36 schools.

If St. John ever rejoins the OHSAA, it will be unique — no other OHSAA school uses Heralds as a mascot.

Other mascots used more than 30 times across the state are Wildcats (33) and Bulldogs (31).
