Warriors work OT for win

Saturday comes through in clutch in beating Harvey

PAINESVILLE — The Edgewood Warriors survived in thrilling fashion on Wednesday night at Harvey, outlasting the Red Raiders, 48-46 in overtime.

With 1 minute and 42 seconds left in the fourth quarter Edgewood was trailing Harvey, 41-39. After a Warriors steal in the right corner of the floor gave the team momentum then Gia Saturday hit a huge 3-pointer to take the lead 42-41.

“I knew I would just keep getting looks from my teammates and my shot would fall,” Saturday said. “Steals help a lot, the whole team gets pumped.”

A free throw by the Red Raiders tied the game up then with 12 seconds left on the clock senior point guard Amber Land dribbled through the defense for a floater on the right side giving Harvey the two-point advantage, 44-42.

The Warriors (2-4) countered when Carrie Pascarella found an open Alyssa Johnson for a layup with only 7 seconds left to send the game to overtime.

“Absolutely nothing,” Johnson said of what was going through her head during the layup. “Another layup at practice. Positioning, I was excited, it was crunch time.”

Harvey (2-4, 0-2) started things off in overtime with another Land basket, giving the Red Raiders a crucial 46-44 lead and all of the momentum to start overtime.

But with two plus minutes left in the extra frame, Pascarella was fouled and went to the line to shoot two. Despite a raucous road crowd, Pascarella blocked it all out and nailed two straight free throws to tie the game at 46.

“I concentrated on what we worked on in practice,” Pascarella said.

After drawing a few of more fouls late in overtime, both Johnson and Saturday connected on a free throw to give Edgewood the lead at 48-46 with less than a minute left to play.

An Edgewood turnover gave Harvey another chance with only 19 seconds left on the clock, but Warriors sophomore Taylor Diemer sealed the deal for the Warriors win with a steal in the closing seconds giving Edgewood the win.

“I boxed out as much as I can, I knew they couldn’t get over court,” Diemer said.

“The key was continued effort,” Edgewood coach Dave McCoy said. “No quit. Still need to rebound, but we showed determination. We stepped up at the right time.”

Overall, coach McCoy was happy to get out of Harvey with the win.

“I am ecstatic… it’s one of those things,” McCoy said. “We showed composure. I am happy we made free throws.”

Alyssa Johnson led the way for Edgewood with a team highs in points (14) and rebounds (8) for the Warriors. Saturday added 10, including three huge 3’s and 5 steals, while Pascarella kicked in 8 points and 2 steals. Diemer contributed 7 points to go with 7 boards while Cortney Humphrey added 3 points and 7 rebounds in the win.

As for Harvey, the Red Raiders had an impressive 40 rebounds throughout the game, with three people getting double digit rebounds.

“We actually set goals to get 25 rebounds and 14 offensive rebounds and we had that at halftime,” Harvey coach John Sams said. “(We) played pretty good, we are young, maturing.”

The Red Raiders struggled from the free throw line going 4-20, and look to improve on that throughout the rest of the season.

“We’ve been stressing ‘em all week, youthful mentality,” Sams said of how important free throws are to a game.

Amber Land led the way for the Red Raiders with a huge game of a game high 20 points, 7 rebounds, 7 steals, and 3 assists for Harvey.

“She stepped up, we put it on her shoulders, and she did,” Sams said proudly of his player’s performance.

Myia McDade had 6 points, 10 rebounds and 3 steals for Harvey while Brianna Jones had 3 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
