Locals shoot the hoop!

RAVENNA — Three boys and three girls, ages 8-13, won the third round of competition in the Elks Hoopshoot free-throw contest at Ravenna High School and have been named district champions.

Ayden Richmond (23), Savannah Cerjan (10), Abby Carter (19) and Megan Pitcher (12+3), all of Geneva Schools, finished second in their respective age groups as they represented Ashtabula Elks #208 at the Northeast District Shootoff. (Number of shots made is in parentheses after each name out of 25).

Last year, Richmond finished seventh at the national finals, but his 23 out of 25 was only good enough for second place on Saturday. Carson Mongell (12) also participated and finished in a tie for sixth place.

“The kids really did wonderful,” Ashtabula Lodge #208 Hoopshoot director J.P. Ducro IV said. “It seems every year, Ashtabula County has had representatives do fantastic at the district.”

The Elks Hoopshoot, begun as a local program by Corvallis, Oregon Elks in 1946, is in its 43rd year of national competition. More than 1.5 million boys and girls are expected to participate this year.

Names of the national winners will be inscribed on the Elks National Hoopshoot plaque, on permanent display in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass.

The competition represents one of many activities sponsored by the Elks as part of its ongoing commitment to drug awareness and education.
