Eagles fly to district

Lynham, Forman finish second at sectional

The Geneva Eagles will carry the flag for the area’s girls tennis programs when district-level play tips off next week — and will be doing so in style.

Coach Scott Torok’s doubles team of Alyx Lynham and Anna Forman earned a second seed at the Division II district tournament at Weis Park in Canton with a 6-2, 6-1 victory against Chagrin Falls on Thursday at Brush.

Though they lost in the championship match to the top-seeded team of Sidney Green and Emily Leizman, 6-1, 6-0, Lynham and Forman had already punched their ticket to Canton and done so in impressive manner as at least No. 2 seed, which is what they will be.

“This is kind of what we shoot for, once the league race is done,” Torok, whose Eagles won another Premier Athletic Conference championship this fall. “I’m proud of Alyx and Anna. They had nothing to lose today, because as I told them, ‘if we win today, we’re going to Canton. If we lose today, we’re going to Canton. So go play.’”

And play, they did, becoming the first Eagles to reach the district level since Courtney Brenkus, who became the first Ashtabula County player to reach the state tournament in 2000.

“They got off to a great start (Thursday), that was key,” Torok said of Lynham, a junior, and Forman, a senior. “The girls played very well.”

The area’s other player still alive at the sectional, Jefferson’s Megan Cowling, was eliminated in a match to reach the district by Mary Lenk of Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin, 6-3, 6-1.
