Roundup: Eagles keep on rolling

Star Beacon

Geneva’s girls basketball team kept rolling along Wednesday night, remaining undefeated with a convincing 67-13 Northeastern Conference road victory over Harvey.

The Eagles (6-0, 3-0) had the game in hand after the first quarter, racking up a 20-4 lead. The margin expanded to 37-6 at halftime and 48-10 after three quarters.

Geneva coach Nancy Barbo was pleased with her team’s attention to detail.

“I thought the girls played a solid game,” she said. “I thought they made sharp passes and did a good job of offensive rebounding.”

All but one of 10 players in the Geneva lineup scored. Natalie Stanley led the Eagles with 16 points, while Krista Blake had 14 points and also led the team with five steals and Courtney Thompson added 12 points. LaNesha Spikes led Harvey (1-3, 0-3) with four points.

n Riverside 49, Chardon 44 — The Beavers broke out to a 14-10 lead after the first quarter and held the Hilltoppers at bay in a Premier Athletic Conference road game. Balanced scoring carried Riverside (2-2, 2-0) as Christina Minjares, who scored 14 points, and Erica Tanski, who scored nine, each hit two free throws down the stretch, while Belicia Cooper added 11 points. Shelby Sharpnack nearly had a triple-double with 10 points, 12 rebounds and nine steals. Tanski added nine points and three blocked shots. Halle Herringshaw topped Chardon with 18 points.

n North 49, Madison 45 — The Blue Streaks got off to a slow start in the first quarter as the Rangers grabbed a 16-4 lead and held on from their in the PAC game. Kate Thompson nearly saved the day for Madison (5-2, 1-1) with 17 points, including five 3-pointers. Sam Blazetic offset that for North with 20 points.

Boys basketball

Berkshire met or topped the 20-point barrier in each of the first three quarters as the Badgers topped Grand Valley, 87-56, in a Chagrin Valley Conference Valley Division game. Berkshire has not lost a CVC Valley game since the opening game of the 2005 season against Hawken, according to Berkshire sources, a streak that has now reached 41 games. Tim Goff topped Berkshire (3-0, 2-0) with 24 points, while Billy Poole added 19 and six assists, Bryce Smetana contributed 15 points and eight rebounds and T.J. Wright scored 10 points. A.J. Henson and Anthony Oscar led GV (0-3, 0-2) with 12 points each, while Robby Slusher added 10 points.

n Not reported — Perry at Chagrin Falls.

Wrestling

Pymatuning Valley swept a pair of dual matches on the road in Akron as it pounded host Ellet, 62-12, and slipped by Liberty, 39-34. The Lakers (4-0) were led by two pins each from Chuck Crowther (171) and Cody Williams (135). Tim Goodman (130) had a pin and a technical fall, while Zach Jones (119) and Ray Nevison (145) each had a pin and forfeit and Jacob Brown (152) had a pin and a decision.
