One day after suffering last-second heartbreak on the football field, the Geneva Eagles saw defeat in the final seconds on the soccer pitch.
Trailing by one goal at half, the Perry Pirates scored twice in the second half, including Billy Walker’s goal with five seconds to play to claim a 2-1 win over the Eagles at Perry.
Walker’s goal was assisted by Braden Ferrell.
Pat Dohery, off a Brian Mead helper, gave Geneva (2-3-2), which outshot Perry 12-7, a 1-0 lead heading into the intermission, but Mike Arcaro evened the game in the second half with the help of Brennan Sailors.
Perry’s (4-3) Tyler Wiersma made 11 saves in net to earn the win.
Volleyball
Jefferson claimed victories over Grand Valley, 25-22, 25-14, and Richmond Heights, 25-21, 25-19, at Grand Valley.
In the win over the Mustangs (4-7, 1-3 in Chagrin Valley Conference Valley Division), Lizzy “K2” Ziemski had seven aces on 12 of 15 spiking and two aces on 3 of 4 blocking and Sam Morford had seven aces on 10 of 11 spiking and two aces on 3 of 3 blocking for the Falcons (5-5, 1-1 in Northeastern Conference).
Pallavi Iyer had four aces on 40 of 41 setting for Grand Valley.
In the win over Richmond Heights, Ziemski had seven aces on 13 of 13 spiking and Morford had six aces on 15 of 16 spiking.
The Mustangs also downed Richmond Heights, 25-17, 25-17. Chelsea Hanck was 14-of-19 spiking with six aces and Iyer was 37 for 37 spiking with four aces.
n Pymatuning Valley 25, 25, 25; Jamestown (Pa.) 18, 8, 15 — Brittany Jock tallied 12 points, while Kayla Landis provided 11 as Pymatuning Valley remained unbeaten with a win in Jamestown.
Landis added a 24-28 spiking performance, with seven ace spikes, and a 27-of-28 passing day.
Becca Magyar led the Lakers (7-0, 5-0 Northeaster Athletic Conference) with eight ace spikes, going 18-of-19 in the process, while Jenn Tennant and Rose Lane combined to go 73-of-76 setting.
n North Royalton 25, 19, 25, 25; Lakeside 21, 25, 20, 19 — Brittany Morrison had a team-high eight ace spikes and Tayler Pugliese had 12 ace sets but it wasn’t enough for Lakeside (8-3, 4-0 Primer Athletic Conference) as it fell in four games.
Erica Villa turned in a perfect 14-for-14 serving night with six aces and Mallory Zappitelli added eight aces on 14-of-15 serving. Pugliese was 45-of-46 setting, while Chris Blakeslee went 39-of-42 with 10 ace sets.
n Geneva 25-25-16-25, Mayfield 12-20-25-21 — Brittany Powers had 17 points and Erica Napier had 11 ace blocks to lead Geneva past Mayfield in four games.
Powers added a 27-of-28 passing night with 16 aces, while Napier went 16-of-17 spiking with seven aces for Geneva (5-0, 1-0 Northeastern Conference). Hillary Hamilton went 25-of-29 spiking with a team-high 12 ace spikes, and Breana Freeman had the offense running smoothly, going 84-of-86 setting.
