— Barring a collapse in Saturday’s Northeastern Conference Tournament on its own courts or a loss in their remaining two dual matches, Geneva’s girls tennis team virtually sealed the deal on ringing down the curtain on its stay in the NEC with another conference title by defeating Jefferson, 4-1, Wednesday.
Coach Scott Torok said the victory for the Eagles (10-2, 6-0) was hard to secure.
“It was a battle,” he said.
Jefferson (6-4, 4-2) is the closest to Geneva. If the Eagles finish no worse than third in Saturday’s tournament, which begins at 8:30 a.m., it will wrap up at least a share of its eighth NEC title in the nine-year history of a championship race in the sport and its third straight.
Courtney Thompson at first singles was the most dominating Eagle with a 6-3, 6-0 victory. Allie Mack and Sarah Smith at second doubles had to fight the hardest for their win, 7-5, 6-3.
Julia Mansfield produced Jefferson’s lone victory, a 7-5, 6-3 decision at third singles.
n Harvey 4, Conneaut 1 — The Red Raiders took the first four matches to earn the NEC win, its first. Lakeisha Ferguson and Sam Mann were 6-1, 6-3 winners at first and third singles for Harvey (2-7, 1-4), respectively. The closest match was at second singles, where Ashley Galadya outlasted Kaylee Ely of Conneaut (1-6, 1-4) on a 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) decision.
n Beachwood 4, Perry 1 — The second-doubles team of Abbey Hilborn and Alex Nichols saved the Pirates from a shutout by the Bisons as they earned a 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) win in the Chagrin Valley Conference match.

Boys golf
Pymatuning Valley closed in on a successful defense of its Northeastern Athletic Conference title with a 187-200 victory over Bristol. Jon York led the Lakers (12-2, 9-0) with a 42, while Dylan Young shot a 45 and Adam Lance and Mac Thurber each carded a 50.

Girls golf
A 40 by Shelly Ford powered Jefferson to a 207-258 win over North. Christen Lucas and Kaitlin Pestello each shot a 55, while Joanne Beckwith fired a 57 for the final score that counted for the Falcons (10-4, 4-0 Northeastern Conference). Brianne Bodisch also topped North’s first scorer with a 58.
n South 182, Lakeside 193, Edgewood 206 — A 4-over-par by Lisa Barber led the Rebels to victory. Krista Johnston and Stephanie Winters each had a 47 for Lakeside (10-5), while Yeram Kang led Edgewood (9-7) with a 47.

Girls soccer
Krista Blake scored two goals and assisted on Suelen Gutierrez’s opening goal in Geneva’s 4-0 Northeastern Conference win over Jefferson. Ashley Carroll also scored an unassisted goal for the Eagles (5-0-1, 2-0), while Jillian Nazor had five saves in goal. Emily Fuller had seven saves for Jefferson (1-2-1, 1-1).

Boys soccer
Garrett Biese scored a goal and assisted on two others to lead Riverside to a 4-2 victory over Chardon in Premier Athletic Conference action. Brian Nelson had seven saves for the Beavers (4-0-2, 2-0).

Boys CC
Kyle Eastlake finished second overall in 19:06 to lead PV to a fifth-place finish in Suburban League action. The Lakers had 94 points, while Niles won the meet at Brookfield with 48 points.

Girls CC
Felicia Morrison topped PV with a sixth-place finish in 23:50 to lead the Lakers to fifth place with 85 points. Brookfield won the meet on its home course with 51 points.

Junior high golf
Adam Suckel and Dylan Wisuri each shot a 45 over the back nine at Maple Ridge Golf Course to lead Lakeside to a 199-230 victory over SS. John and Paul and keep the Dragons undefeated. Colton Mukina turned in a 50 and Jarrod Vernille carded a 59 to complete the scoring for Lakeside (8-0). Ryan Nappi led SJP with a 45, while Joe Paolillo had a 56, Alicia Lewis shot a 64 and Mallory McBee had a 65. Lakeside hosts Heritage Middle School of Painesville today at 3:30 p.m. at Chapel Hills Golf Course.

Junior high volleyball
SS. John and Paul rallied from a one-game deficit to defeat Braden in eighth-grade volleyball, 10-25, 25-19, 25-18. Alex Ferrante and Liz Kovacs each scored 10 points to lead SJP (2-1).
n SJP 7th 25-25, Braden 7th 4-8 — The Heralds remained undefeated (3-0) behind nine points each from Emily Powers and Courtney Shears. The Heralds play Monday at 4 p.m. at Jefferson.

Junior high tennis
Trailing 2-0 after the first two singles, Geneva rallied to earn a 3-2 victory over Jefferson. Kristen Farrel got the Eagles (2-0) started by outlasting Autumn Hayes, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 at third singles. Geneva’s first-doubles team of Alex Clarke and Brooke Mihalick defeated Sarah Brook and Katie Scafuro, 6-0, 6-3, and Shaela Phillips and Lindsey Varckette capped the comeback with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Katrena Colvin and Hannah Fedrick, 6-2, 6-0. Jefferson’s wins came from Sarah Jeppeson with a 6-3, 6-4 triumph over Megan Cowling at first singles and a 6-4, 6-3 win by Maddie Jarrell over Anna Freeman at second singles.
