Paced by a fine round from Dylan Young, the Pymatuning Valley boys golf team earned a 171-193 victory Monday over Edgewood in non-conference action.
Young shot a one-over-par 36 at Andover Golf Course to lead the Lakers (10-2, 7-0 in Northeastern Athletic Conference) to victory. Jon York supported him with a 42, while Adam Lane with a 46 and Zach Fedeo with a 47 rounded out the scoring for PV. Dustin Mills topped Edgewood (3-9) with a 45, while Anthony Zappitelli fired a 47.
Girls golf
Perry’s first two scorers finished well ahead of their two opponents’ first player as it finished with 210 to 231 for Geneva and 274 for SS. John and Paul. Ashley Rideout shot a 45, while Erica Erkkila had for Perry (8-1). Michelle Lang added a 56 and Emily Blaha rounded out the scoring for Perry with a 58. Lindsey Adams led Geneva (8-5) with a 54, while Stephanie Clark carded a 58. Liz Shouvlin topped SJP (2-13) with a 65, while Nicole Gallo added a 68.
n Conneaut 249, North 256 — Powered by a 49 from Kelsey Weske, the Spartans slipped past the Rangers. Laina Iarocci supported Weske with a 57 for Conneaut (5-7), while Alexa Griswold added a 64 and Jill Warren had a 79 to round out the scoring.
Tennis
Two matches were taken to three sets, but Geneva still managed a 5-0 sweep of Edgewood in Northeastern Conference action. Courtney Thompson had the easiest win of the day for the Eagles (7-2, 5-0) with a 6-0, 6-1 win at first singles. while Brittany Kelly was a 6-1, 6-1 winner at third singles and Allie Mack and Sarah Smith were 6-3, 6-0 winners at second doubles. The best battles were at first doubles, where Nichole Boruta and Betsy Edwards rallied from a one-set deficit for a 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 win over Lindsey Robertson and Lizz Walker at first doubles and Jessica Coggins outlasted Connie Tate at second singles, 6-2, 5-7, 6-2.
n Jefferson 5, Harvey 0 — The Falcons stayed within striking distance of Geneva in the NEC tennis race heading to Saturday’s NEC Tournament at Geneva at 8:30 a.m. with their sweep of the Red Raiders. Jackie and Jenny Piscsalko had the most convincing win for Jefferson (6-3, 4-1) with a 6-2, 6-2 decision at first doubles. Carey Hartman worked the hardest for her victory, a 6-4, 6-4 decision at third singles.
n Chardon 3, Lakeside 2 — The Dragons held a 2-1 lead after singles, but couldn’t hold its advantage in the doubles in the Premier Athletic Conference match. Marissa Dioneff shut out her opponent at third singles for the Dragons (4-7, 2-3), while Megan Reichert was a 6-4, 6-4 winner at second singles.
n Hawken 5, Perry 0 — The Pirates were able to manage just 10 games off the Hawks in Chagrin Valley Conference action. The closest battle was at first doubles, where Emily and Kaley Kahoun dropped a 6-2, 6-2 decision.
Girls soccer
Stacy Mead gave Geneva the only goal it really needed with 25 minutes left in the match on an assist from Jordyn Barrington and Emma Kingzett added an insurance goal four minutes later to give the Eagles a 2-0 win over Edgewood in the NEC opener for both teams. Jillian Nazor stopped all five shots she faced for Geneva (4-0-1, 1-0). Kingzett has scored unassisted on three corner kicks in the last two matches. Cayli Calogero had nine saves for Edgewood.
n Jefferson 6, Harvey 0 — Gina Chiacchiero scored two unassisted goals and helped on the first of Sarah Claypool’s two goals to lead the Falcons past the Red Raiders in their NEC opener. Stephanie Cole scored the final goal for Jefferson (1-1-1, 1-0) and assisted on Claypool’s second goal, while Claypool also passed to Amanda Gilchrist on her goal. Jefferson goalkeepers Nicole Stuchell, Emily Fuller and Ariel Meighen turned back eight shots between them in preserving the shutout. Melanie Furtaw had 21 saves in goal for Harvey (1-2, 0-1).
n South 6, Madison 3 — Marianna Smith scored two unassisted goals and Moriah Robinson added another for the Blue Streaks, but it wasn’t enough to hold off the Rebels in Premier Athletic Conference action. Lanie Steigner had 11 saves for Madison (1-2-2, 0-1), while Taylor Mullan had two more
Boys soccer
Brandon Quirke scored four goals to lead Riverside to a 10-0 victory over Lakeside in the PAC opener for both teams. Phil Murphy scored a goal and assisted on three others for the Beavers (3-0-2, 1-0), while Ian Moeckel scored once and assisted on two more. Jay Brunstetter also had a goal and an assist for Riverside, while Brian Nelson had three saves. Patrick Pildner had nine saves for Lakeside.
n South 2, Madison 1 — Curtis Weiss gave the Blue Streaks an early lead with an assist from Brandon Grubb, but the Rebels scored twice in the second half to win the PAC match. Austin Farroni had an unassisted goal and passed for Mike Venditti for the winning goal for South (2-3, 1-0). Casey Blabolil had 10 saves for Madison (1-2-2, 0-1).
Volleyball
Pymatuning Valley earned a convincing 25-10, 25-15, 25-12 victory over Maplewood in Northeastern Athletic Conference action and remained undefeated. Anissa Miranda led the Lakers (4-0, 3-0) with 14 points, including two ace serves. Rose Lane added 10 points, including two ace serves, and 15 ace sets, while Venus Cataldo had 10 ace spikes and three ace blocks for the Lakers.
n Conneaut 25-25-25, Strong Vincent 5-7-11 — Twenty-six points, including 10 ace serves, by Nichele Johnson powered the Spartans to a non-conference victory. Kia Thomas had 12 points, including four ace serves for Conneaut (7-2), while Justine VanCise also had 12 points with seven aces and three ace spikes, Rachel Pryately added 11 points and Krista Vendetti had 10 more.
n Chardon 25-25-25, Harvey 16-12-20 — Despite eight points and two ace spikes by Shannon Cruz, the Hilltoppers swept the Red Raiders in non-conference action. Melissa Mohner added four points for Harvey (2-5).
Junior high golf
With two of its four scorers finishing in the 40s, Lakeside remained undefeated with a 188-245 win over SS. John and Paul. Anthony DeGeorge shot a 43 over the par-36 front nine at Chapel Hills Golf Course, while Zach Tackett fired a 45. John Stranman and Jarrod Vernille rounded out the scoring for the Dragons (7-0) with a pair of 50s. Ryan Nappi paced SJP with a 49, while Joe Paolillo had a 60, Alicia Lewis shot a 67 and Mallory McBee had a 69.
Junior high tennis
Geneva got its season off in fine fashion by surrendering just five games in a 5-0 win over Braden.
The Eagles got shutouts from Kristen Farrell at third singles in a win over Meg Ferl and their second-doubles team of Martina Drugovich and Lindsey Varckette over Ella Roncone. Anna Forman was a 6-0, 6-1 winner over Courtney Lambert at second singles, Alexandria Clarke and Brooke Mihalick were 6-1, 6-1 winners at first doubles over Ronnie Brady and Brie McGirr and Megan Cowling was a 6-1, 6-2 victor at first singles over Carrie Pascarella.
