Chris Blakeslee had 15 ace sets and seven ace spikes to help Lakeside cruise past South 25-16, 25-18, 25-19 in Premier Athletic Conference volleyball action.
Tayler Pugliese contributed 14 aces sets on 25-of-27 setting, and Erica Villa turned in a near-perfect 22-of-23 passing performance. Mallory Zappitelli was 9-of-10 spiking with six aces, and Angela DeGeorge was 12 of 13 passing.
n Cornerstone Christian 33, 25, 25, SS. John and Paul 31, 23, 20 — The Heralds could never find a way to put away Cornerstone Christian in their non-conference showdown. The Heralds had a strong passing night, with Sara Blank leading the way with a 65-of-65 setting performance. Kristina Krumins was 35-of-35 setting, and Carly Penna was 45-49 passing.
Mary Mahoney had 17 points for the Heralds, while Ashley Fedler had 16 and Penna and Jenn Kapalin turned in 11 points apiece.
n Berkshire 25, 25, 25, Grand Valley 13, 6, 8 — Randi Woodworth’s perfect passing night wasn’t enough to save Grand Valley. Woodworth went 23-of-23 passing with 13 digs. Pallavi Iyer contributed a 39-of-43 setting night.
n North 25, 25, 25, Madison 12, 18, 12 — Breanna Wilson and Taylor Southall had seven points apiece for Madison, which fell to 5-3 overall.
n Pymatuning Valley 25, 25, 25, Bloomfield 15, 18, 12 — Brandy Romanowski and Jenn Tennant had 12 points apiece, and Kayla Landis had a perfect passing night to lead PV. Landis went 37-of-37 passing, including six ace passes, for the victors.
Lyndsay Carr was 30-of-31 passing, and Tennant was 35-of-35 setting.
n Harvey 25, 25, 25, Andrews 14, 9, 14 — Shannon Cruz had 14 points and Sam Krueger was 56-of-56 setting as Harvey cruised past Andrews.
n Chagrin Falls 23, 25, 25, 27, Perry 25, 18, 16, 25 — Perry couldn’t keep the momentum of its strong start going, falling to Chagrin in four games. Rachel Crittle had 13 ace spikes for Perry, Erin Kline had 17 ace sets and Averi Kuhlman had eight points.
n Conneaut 25, 25, 25, Linesville (Pa.) 23, 11, 16 — Sarah Campbell had 21 points and Tanisha Ford provided 20 to lead Conneaut. Justine VanCise turned in a 27-of-28 passing performance, and Nichele Johnson was 19-of-21 spiking with five aces.
Girls tennis
The Geneva girls dropped just nine games, and no sets, to down Madison on Thursday, 5-0.
The most competitive match of the afternoon came at third singles, where Hannah Reynolds pushed Betsy Edwards in the second set before falling, 6-2, 6-4. Courtney Thompson swept past Madison’s Lillian Zalar, 6-0, 6-0, in first singles, while Brittany Kelly claimed a 6-1, 6-1, win over Ashley Palmer at the second singles spot.
Nichole Boruta and Sarah Smith claimed a straight-set victory over Liz Elmore and Allison Misich, 6-0, 6-0, in first doubles, while the Geneva tandem of Allie Mack and Courtney Raymond defeated Elisha Swindell and Erin Miller, 6-1, 6-0 in a second doubles match.
n Perry 5, Andrews/Osborne 0 — Kaley Kahoun defeated Cindy Heiple, 6-2, 6-2, at first singles as Perry blanked Andrews. Laura Teigeler beat Stephanie Gray at second singles, 6-0, 6-0, and Emily Kahoun claimed a 6-4, 6-3, third-singles win over Alicia Kas. The tandems of Cassie Rideout and Nicole Hogan, at first doubles, and Alex Nichols and Taylor Nyman, at second doubles, were perfect in their respective matches.
n Edgewood 4, NDCL 1 — Morgan Thompson and Paige Schlick needed a tiebreaker to defeated Olivia Tomsick and Christina Beebe on Thursday as Edgewood triumphed over Notre Dame Cathedral Latin.
After claiming the first set, 6-2, the Edgewood pair of Thompson and Schlick dropped the second set, 0-6, before rallying for a 7-6 (10-8) triumph.
In other matches, Edgewood’s Renee Mattson defeated Lisa Sahlani, 6-2, 6-0, at first singles, Connie Tate defeated Olivia Armond, 6-2, 6-2 at second singles, and Lindsey Robertson and Jennifer Meranda took down Courtney Carr and Brittney Shkil, 6-4, 6-2, in first doubles.
n Lakeside 3, Harvey 2 — When they were able to actually play a match, everything went well for the Red Raiders. But those ones they couldn’t play cost them.
Two forfeits, along with Taylor Palmer and Sam Reho’s win at first doubles, proved the difference maker for the Dragons. Lakesha Ferguson defeated Erika Ginn, 6-3, 6-0, at first singles and Ashley Galadya downed Megan Reichart, 3-6, 6-0, 6-1, at second singles for Harvey’s two wins.
Boys golf
Michael Schubert shot a 4-over 39 to lift Geneva past Edgewood at Maple Ridge Golf Club.
Peter Newmeyer and Kevin Beduhn each notched 40s for the Eagles. Shane Taylor led Edgewood with a 46.
n Chardon 164, Lakeside 174 — Holden Parr shot a 39 and Louis Siler pitched in a 41 to lift Chardon past Lakeside at Legend Lakes. Jimmy Frey led Lakeside with a 6-over 42, while Preston Wright had a 43 and Justin Shinault finished at 44.
n Jefferson 173, Harvey 217 — Eric Holodak recorded a match-low 41 and Nick Stranman pitched in a 43 to lift Jefferson at Hickory Grove. Casey Komjati turned in Harvey’s low score with a 44.
Girls golf
Nicolena Ackley shot a 44 and Michelle Lang turned in a round of 45 at Chapel Hills to lead Perry to a tri-meet victory over Lakeside and Conneaut.
Behind the shooting of Ackley and Lang, and Ashley Rideout’s 49, Perry turned in a team score of 188. Lakeside recorded a 202 behind Krista Johnson’s 45, and Conneaut, led by Kelsey Weske’s 44, finished with a 216.
n Jefferson 209, Geneva 214 — Shelly Ford’s 4-over 40 lifted Jefferson past Geneva. Joanne Beckwith was Jefferson’s next low scorer with a 53, and Christen Lucas had a 56.
Nicole Lara led Geneva with a 48 and Lindsey Adams had a 49.
Boys soccer
Curtis Weiss has scored a goal in all four of Madison’s matches this season, with his latest effort lifting the Blue Streaks to a 2-2 tie against Geneva at Geneva High School.
After the Eagles took a 2-1 lead into halftime, Weiss found the back of the net off a Bob Berezic assist at the 56:17 mark to even the score. Ryan Markgraf had an unassisted goal to put Madison on the board first before Tyler Carlisle and Jeff Swanson put the Eagles ahead at the 37:18 mark.
n Cornerstone Christian 4, Edgewood 0 — Edgewood gave up two goals in the first 6 minutes en route to their loss. Scott Hignite recorded 12 saves for the Warriors.
Girls soccer
Maggie Boyle had two goals and an assist — all before halftime — as host Conneaut claimed a 4-0 victory over Youngstown Christian.
The Spartans opened the game with Boyle assisting on Leandra Sears’ goal, then Boyle got into the act herself, using a Sears assist and a Heather Paneto helper to lift Conneaut to a 3-0 advantage before the break. Christina Pape provided Conneaut’s final score, using a Holly Spees assist to find the back of the net. Sadie Duris and Chelsea Loucks split time in net, combining for four saves.
