Roundup: Eagles throw shutout against Wooster

— Geneva’s girls tennis team swept Wooster, 5-0, in state team tennis tournament action Wednesday and also swept into program history.
It marked the first time in coach Scott Torok’s tenure as Eagles boss that Geneva (6-2) has advanced to the third round. Its next opponent is likely to be North Canton Hoover on a date and time yet to be announced.
Courtney Thompson was the most dominant Eagle, earning a 6-2, 6-0 win at first singles. The closest match was produced at first doubles by Nichole Boruta, who was celebrating her 18th birthday, and Betsy Edwards with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 win.
Jessica Coggins was a 6-3, 6-3 winner at second singles, Brittany Kelly battled to a 6-4, 6-4 decision at third singles and the second-doubles team of Allie Mack and Sarah Smith completed the sweep with a 6-4, 6-0 win.
n Lakeside 4, North 1 — Wins at first and third singles and in both doubles matches gave the Dragons the Premier Athletic Conference win. Megan Reichert led the way at third singles with a 6-1, 6-0 win, which was duplicated by Lisa Roane and Sam Reho at first doubles. Erica Ginn was a 6-2, 6-0 winner at first singles for the Dragons (3-6, 2-2).
n West Geauga 3, Perry 2 — Victories by Kaley Kahoun at second singles and Laura Teigeler gave Perry a brief lead, but West Geauga won both doubles matches to earn a victory in Chagrin Valley Conference Chagrin Division play. Teigeler was a 6-2, 6-1 winner and Kahoun took a 6-3, 6-2 decision for the Pirates (4-2).

Volleyball
Edgewood earned its first win of the season by outlasting Madison in a five-game slugfest, 25-23, 24-26, 19-25, 25-22, 15-11. Laura Coxe led the Warriors (1-3) with 14 points and four ace spikes, while Ashley Hunter also had 14 points and Megan Dragon added 13. Kelsey Koskinen topped Madison (5-2) with five ace spikes.
n Gilmour Academy 26-25-25-25-25, Lakeside 28-23-21-22 — The Dragons outlasted the Lancers in the first game of the non-conference battle, but lost the final three games despite more battles. Angela DeGeorge led Lakeside (3-1) with 12 points, while Christiana Blakeslee had 11 points, six aces on 17-of-18 spiking, eight ace dinks and five ace blocks.
n Kenston 25-25-25, Grand Valley 5-5-9 — Two points, 8-of-8 passing and 13-of-13 setting by Kristen McClintock topped the efforts for the Mustangs in the Chagrin Valley Conference crossover match with the Bombers. Cassie Swango and Pallavi Iyer scored one point each for GV (1-3).
n Southington 25-25-18-16-15, Harvey 20-20-25-25-12 — Despite 18 points and five ace spikes by Shannon Cruz and 14 points by Sam Krueger, the Red Raiders (1-4) couldn’t quite get past the Wildcats in non-conference action.

Girls soccer
Three goals by Alyssa DiBenedetto and a shutout from goalie Cayli Calogero powered Edgewood to a 4-0 non-conference victory over Lakeside for the Warriors’ first win of the season. Caity Mills had the other goal for Edgewood (1-3) on an assist from Kelsey Amidon. Calogero stopped three shots for the Warriors. Keiko Sand had 18 saves for Lakeside.

Boys soccer
Three different players scored to lead Harvey to a 3-0 win over Lakeside. Jose Vazquez scored on an Israel Macias assist in the first half, while Oscar Preza and Leonardo Fuentes tallied in the second half for the Red Raiders. Juan Pacheco had eight saves for Harvey. Patrick Pildner had 20 saves for Lakeside (1-3).

Girls golf
All four scorers for Geneva finished ahead of SS. John and Paul’s second golfer to give the Eagles a 220-252 victory. Lindsay Adams led Geneva (7-3) with a 52, while Nicole Lara and Chelsea Maukonen each had a 55 and Alissa Wortman shot a 58. Nicole Gallo led SJP (2-11) with a 56, while Ciara Johnson shot a 63.
n Conneaut 212, PV 236 — The Spartans’ first three golfers finished ahead of or equaled the Lakers’ first scorer. Kelsey Weske shot a 46 for Conneaut (4-5), while Nina Dello had a 54 and Laina Iarocci a 55. Danna Hayford led PV (3-9) with a 55.
n South 183, Shaker Heights 217, Jefferson 219 — Despite a 39 from Shelly Ford, the Falcons finished third in the triangular meet. Breanne Bodisch added a 57 for Jefferson (8-4). Caitlin Kempton shot a one-under-par 35 over the par-36 front nine at Manakiki for Shaker Heights. Lisa Barber led South with a 42.
n Perry 217, Aurora 221 — A 44 by Ashley Rideout led the Pirates to a CVC Chagrin victory over the Greenmen. Emily Blaha added a 56 for Perry (4-1, 1-1).

Boys golf
Strong rounds from first and second scorers Adam Lane and Jon York helped Pymatuning Valley remained undefeated in Northeastern Athletic Conference action, 189-196. Lane shot a 42 and York had a 46. Frank Boggs had a 50 and Mac Thurber a 51 to back them up for PV (9-2, 7-0). Robbie Ensign led Lordstown (5-9, 1-5) with a 44.

Boys cross country
Although it did not field a full team, Austin Drenski led Grand Valley with a third-place finish in 19:43. Fairport’s Dylan Knight was the overall winner in 19:24. Newbury was the team winner with 37 points.

Girls cross country
None of the four teams competing at Newbury could field a full team. Grand Valley’s Katherine Carson was second in 25:18, while Siera Holley was third in 26:10 and Lauren Prax placed sixth in 28:04. Newbury’s Michelle Ullman was the winner in 25:02.

Junior high golf
All four of Lakeside’s scorers were better or equal to SS. John and Paul’s low man in a 194-224 victory that kept the Dragons undefeated. Anthony DeGeorge led the Dragons (6-0) with a 45, while Colton Mukina and Adam Suckel each shot a 48 and Jarrod Vernille turned in a 53. Ryan Nappi led SJP with a 53.
