Roundup: Heralds get past Spartans

— Mary Mahoney got out of the gate on the right foot in leading SS. John and Paul to a season-opening non-conference win, 25-15, 21-25, 25-23, 25-12, over Conneaut.
Mahoney scored 14 points, had 18 aces on 37-of-39 spiking and seven aces on 15-of-18 blocking for the Heralds (1-0). She was also 27-32 passing and 16-16 setting. Jessica Hunyady chipped in with 22 points, four aces on 18-of-22 spiking and six aces on 18-of-20 blocking. Jen Kapalin was 10-of-11 spiking with two aces and 15-16 blocking with five aces.
Kelsey Prevot scored 15 with four aces and was 93-of-103 setting to pace the Spartans (2-1). Justine VanCise was 21-of-26 spiking with 10 aces, Nichele Johnson was 23-of-27 spiking with 13 aces and Sarah Campbell was 21-of-25 spiking with 12 aces.

Tennis
n Jefferson 7, McDowell 0 — Chelsea Jarrell, Kelly Tisch and Julia Mansfield all won in straight sets in singles play and each only lost one game for the Falcons (3-0, 1-0 in Northeastern Conference). All four doubles teams also claimed victories in straight sets.
n Edgewood 3, Conneaut 2 — The doubles teams of Lindsey Robertson and Liz Walker and Jennifer Miranda and Paige Schlick claimed straight-set victories to give the Warriors (1-2, 1-1 in NEC) their first league win of the year. Renee Mattson also claimed a three-set win at first singles. Megan Merlene (second doubles) and Alexandra Nardo won for the Spartans.
n Geneva 5, Harvey 0 — Courtney Thompson won in a shutout at first singles and Jessica Coggins and Brittany Kelly also added victories at singles for the Eagles (3-1, 2-0 in NEC).
n Perry 3, Lake Catholic 2 — The first-doubles team of Cassie Rideout and Nicole Hogan won in three sets to give the Pirates (3-1) the non-conference win. Laura Teigeler (second singles) and Olivia Woycheck-Wright also won for Perry.

Boys golf
n Conneaut 187, Pymatuning Valley 188, Edgewood 212 — Andrew Bunnell blazed his way to a 38 on the par-36 back nine at Maple Ridge to give the Spartans (5-1, 2-0 in NEC) a one-stroke win. Tyler Howard added a 45. Jon York, Mac Thurber, Adam Lane and Neil Guman all completed the course with a 47 for the Lakers. Shane Taylor paced the Warriors with a 45.
n Cuyahoga Heights 191, Grand Valley 213 — Aaron Humensky carded a 42 at par-36 Bristolwood to pace the Mustangs (0-3, 0-3 in Chagrin Valley Conference Valley Division).

Girls golf
n Edgewood 232, Conneaut 249 — Yeram Kang played her way to a 48 on the par-36 front nine at Windy Hill to pace the Warriors (6-4, 1-0 in NEC). Amanda Hardy added 59. Kelsey Weske led the Spartans (2-3, 0-1 in NEC) with a 57.
n Jefferson 221, Geneva 230 — Shelly Ford blazed through the par-36 front nine at Hickory Grove with a 41 to finish nine strokes ahead of the Eagles’ best finisher, Nicole Lara (50), to give the Falcons the win.
n North 238, SJP 245 — Nicole Gallo finished the par-36 back nine at Lost Nation with a 54 and Ciara Johnson added a 59 for the Heralds (2-6).

Junior high golf
n Lakeside 183, Geneva 227 — Anthony DeGeorge fired a 39 to lead the Dragons (3-0) on the par-36 front nine at Hemlock Springs. Adam Suckel added a 47, Zach Tackett a 48 and Johnny Stranman a 49. Megan Lara and Zach Zehe each carded a 55 for the Eagles (0-1).
