Tribe Notebook: Rehab trio not quite ready to go

DETROIT — The Indians will wait and see on their rehabbing trio.

Victor Martinez, Travis Hafner and Josh Barfield won’t be ready for big-league action until Friday at the earliest, probably longer in Hafner and Barfield’s cases. Manager Eric Wedge indicated the club won’t make any moves before the off-day Thursday.

Martinez, who had right elbow surgery in June, will catch tonight and DH another for Triple-A Buffalo before the Indians make a decision on him. Hafner’s situation is not quite as clear.

“Pronk” will sit the next two days as the Indians try to find the right mix of prep work and game swings for him.

“Haf still feels some soreness,” Wedge said about the slugger’s right shoulder. “We’re still trying to build the foundation for him. He’s going to have a couple of work days and then get him back in there. I think he’s getting better and moving forward. We may need to run him through this week and see how it plays out.”

Wedge denied this is a setback for Hafner, who’s been on the DL since May 30.

“I think it’s just part of the process,” Wedge said. “He didn’t play for 10 weeks.”

Barfield (left middle finger) will most likely stay with Buffalo through its regular season, which ends Sept. 1. Wedge wants to get Barfield reps, and his time with the big-league club will be limited with Asdrubal Cabrera playing well.

Wedge is also taking into consideration any move before September would require a corresponding move to make room. Major-league rosters expand on Sept. 1.

n UP NEXT — LHP Cliff Lee goes for his 19th win of the season tonight. That would be his career high. RHP Chris Lambert makes his major-league debut for Detroit.

n ON THEIR WAY — Wedge said Monday “we got a pretty good feel on what we’re going to do” in regards to September callups. The Indians won’t be bringing up a lot of guys, especially with the three on rehab returning. Wedge indicated the callups will mostly be pitchers. Double-A Akron’s Matt LaPorta, who was back at Canal Park on Monday after playing for Team USA in the Olympics, won’t likely be brought up.

n LEAD FEET — Wedge was asked Monday if he’d like to add more speed to the Indians for next year. He said sure, mentioning that the Indians only have a few players capable of stealing bases.

“Other than that,” he said, searching for the right words, “we’re slow. I don’t know what other way to put it.”

n ON THE FARM — Akron 3B Wes Hodges was named to the Eastern League All-Star Team. He’s batting .285 with 16 home runs and 91 RBI. His RBI rank second in the EL. ... Through his first 11 games with Mahoning Valley, Tim Fedroff, the Indians’ 2007 seventh-round draft pick, batted .349 (15-for-43).

n TRIBE TIDBITS — The Indians didn’t arrive in Detroit until 4:30 A.M. Monday, coming from Texas. “Love those Sunday night games,” Wedge said. The Indians didn’t report to the ballpark until around 5 p.m. ... The Indians activated RHP Matt Ginter from the DL on Monday and outrighted him to Buffalo. Ginter, who was put on the DL Aug. 4 with forearm soreness, had been rehabbing in Winter Haven.
