MASSILLON — The high-flying Ohio Jaguars 18-and-under squad was one inning from a perfect opening day at the Summer Best of the Best on Friday at Genshaft Park.
So, after dropping a 6-3 opener to Road Runner Elite, the Jaguars turned to pitchers Megan Dragon and Julie Ezzo in the next two games.
And they didn't disappoint.
Dragon was brilliant in firing a no-hitter to lead the Jaguars to a 5-0 victory against Ohio Ice Blue to even the Jaguars' pool-play record at 1-1. Ezzo followed in fine fashion, throwing a four-hitter and allowing but one unearned run as the Jaguars finished their day with a 5-1 triumph against Pittsburgh Power.
Dragon was dominating, improving her record to 7-3 as the struck out five and walked two in her gem. She threw 83 pitches, 55 of which were strikes.
She was supported by a four-run first, the big hits being an RBI single by Hannah Francis and a two-run single by Dragon after Lauren Childs and Courtney Francis drew bases on balls and Callie Busch reached on an error.
The Jaguars tacked on a fifth run just for good measure in the fourth when Jenn Tennant clobbered a long triple to right and scored on a clutch two-out RBI single up the gut by Kara Egelsky.
The Jaguars piled up seven hits in 23 at-bats against Kent State University pitcher Markie Pozzutto, a former Maplewood star, who took the loss.
Against Pittsburgh Power, the locals trailed, 1-0, entering the home half of the fourth but stage a five-run eruption.
Ezzo was hit by a pitch and with Tennant running for her, Childs reached on a bunt single and Katie McMellen reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases for Courtney Francis.
The Star Beacon Ashtabula County Player of the Year lined a two-run single to center to put the Jaguars up, 2-1. Bayle Boggs singled, Tennant smashed a double to left-center and Hannah Francis sealed the deal with a key two-run single to left-center to cap the uprising.
Ezzo peppered the strike zone, needing only 69 pitches to cover the seven innings, a stellar 55 of which were strikes. She struck out two and did not walk a batter.
In the disappointing opener, the Jaguars took a 3-0 lead in the home half of the first when Courtney Francis walked and stole second and Boggs was hit by a pitch and both advanced on a fielder's choice by Busch. Francis then scored on a wild pitch and Tennant belted yet another extra-base hit, a two-run double to right-center.
Unfortunately, that was the extent of the offense for the Jaguars, who musted but four hits in the defeat.
Egelsky (5-2) worked the first 5.1 innings in taking the loss, allowing 10 hits, six runs (5 earned), striking out one and walking three. She threw 92 pitches, 53 of which were strikes.
