The Jefferson Post 152 American Legion baseball squad came home as runner-up from the Mentor Firecracker Tournament on Sunday.
Post 152 rallied for a 7-6 win against the Willoughby South Rebels to reach the championship game, where it bowed to Northwestern, Pa. out of Albion, 7-3.
The locals were down, 6-4, entering the top of the seventh against South. However, Kevin Placek reached after striking out on an error by the catcher and Mitch Berrier laid down a sacrifice bunt. Back-to-back walks to Kyle Blon and Grant Wenger loaded the bases and Placek scored on an RBI groundout by Brian Jewell.
Mike Finch, who had cracked a solo homer in the third, was intentionally walked to reload the bases.
Jon York then followed Placek’s lead by striking out but reaching on an error by the catcher to tie the game and then Adam Placek was hit by a pitch to score Wenger with the goahead run.
Kevin Placek then relieved starter Mac Thurber (6 IP, 7 hits, 6 runs, 5 K, 6 BB) and fanned two and walked one in slamming the door in the seventh to record the save.
The title game didn’t go as well, however, and Post 152 will take a 13-11 record in Tuesday’s game against visiting Wickliffe at Cotton Field at Havens Complex, first pitch set for 6:15 p.m.
