The Ohio Jaguars went 2-2 in pool play at the 16-and-under NSA State Tournament on Saturday in Canfield.
The locals dropped a 10-2 verdict to Fierce Fastpitch in their opener, the lone highlight being a double by Rachel Elizabeth Francis.
The Jaguars came back with a 14-3 thumping of Valley Sting to even their mark at 1-1 as Celine Pollander notched the win on the bump, striking out three and walking one.
Emily Hicks (triple, double, 5 RBI), Katie Holmes (2 hits, 2 RBI), Sarah Urchek (2 hits, double, 2 RBI) and Francis (2 hits, 2 ribbies) led the hit parade for the winners.
The Jaguars rode Urchek’s strong right arm to a 3-2 win over Ohio Ice in their third game.
Urchek went the distance, scattering five hits, fanning a pair and walking only one.
Meghan Cunha had two hits, including the gamewinner in the bottom of the sixth, which followed a key two-run knock by Kara Barnes that tied the game at 2-2.
Amanda Tennant also added two hits, with Francis clubbing another twobagger.
The Jaguars finished Day 1 of the tournament with a 9-5 loss to the Ohio Magic.
Among Cunha’s three hits was a leadoff roundtripper and she drove in two runs, while Tennant again had two hits and Francis again had a double.
The Jaguars, who are managed by Steve “Skipper” Urchek and ably coached by the legendary Rod Holmes, Steve “Sasquatch” Cunha and Scott “Cliff” Francis, will resume play today.
