Jeremy Huber took over the helm of the Pymatuning Valley boys basketball program six years ago and vowed the Lakers would play hard, regardless of whether they were winning or losing.
During his tenure at PV, Huber’s teams did just that, becoming known for a tenacious defense and an up-tempo offense that gave opposing teams fits.
The Star Beacon has leared Huber has resigned his post with the Lakers to take a job as principal at a school near Pittsburgh. Efforts to reach Huber on Tuesday night were not successful.
As coach of the Lakers, Huber compiled a 107-27 record for a .799 winning percentage. His teams won three Northeastern Athletic Conference championships, three Division III sectional championships, a district championship and finished as regional runner-up once.
During that time, Huber was named Star Beacon Ashtabula County Coach of the Year five times, sharing the honor twice.
In the five years prior to Huber taking over the team, the Lakers were 9-97 (.085) and had not won a sectional championship since 1991-92 or a league title since winning the East Suburban Conference in 1996-97.
This past season may have Huber’s most difficult with the Lakers, with the death of principal, assistant coach and long-time friend Jeff Meddock last fall. Yet, Huber guided the team to a 16-6 record and a berth in the district tournament.
As a player, Huber won a pair of Pennsylvania state championships at Blackhawk High School and lettered three times while there. He went on to play on basketball a full scholarship at Geneva College before moving on to PV right out of college. He served as an assistant coach under Ken Newman and Tice before assuming the position as head coach.
