JEFFERSON TOWNSHIP — Strongsville lived up to its name Monday night at Havens Complex.
Jefferson’s Post 152 American Legion squad saw that first hand as it suffered an 11-3 defeat at the hands Strongsville’s Post 795 at Cotton Field.
Strongsville set the tone of the game in the second innning with a three-run homer that was backed by hits a double and single.
Jefferson’s Mike Finch responded to Strongsville’s strong showing in the bottom half of the inning with a screamer over the left-field fence bringing the score to 6-1, but it wasn’t enough to bring Post 152 back into the game.
Strongsville (13-7) widened the gap on Post 152 in the last two innings with five more runs.
Jefferson’s Mac Thurber went 2-for-3 with a single and an RBI double in the sixth inning to bring Jefferson up to three runs.
“We were hitting the ball just as well as the other team was,” assistant coach Tim Blon said. “Their hits were just more timely than ours were.”
Jefferson (10-9) broke even with Strongsville’s offense with both teams getting nine hits. The difference made was in the pitching. Through the rotation of four pitchers, Jefferson walked eight batters. Placek struck out two batters in the two short innings he pitched in.
Strongsville’s pitching outdid Jefferson’s pitching staff with its starter, who pitched through four innings allowing only three hits and striking out three batters.
Jefferson will visit Wickliffe tonight, first pitch set for 6:15.
