Wednesday’s May showers played havoc with a full slate of sectional tournament games in baseball and softball, pushing them back to this afternoon and adding to what already figured to be a busy day.
Aside from the coach Russ Bell’s seventh-seedde Grand Valley Mustangs, who dropped a 12-0 verdict at top-seeded Ursuline in a Division III sectional final baseball game.
Chief among the events moved back from Wednesday until today were SS. John and Paul’s Division IV sectional championship baseball game with second-seeded Maplewood at Cederquist Park, the meeting of fifth-seeded Geneva and top-seeded Edgewood at Edgewood for a Division II softball sectional title and a confrontation between fourth-seeded Lakeview and second-seeded Jefferson for another Division II sectional softball title at the JAGS Complex.
Third-seeded Pymatuning Valley also finds itself on its home turf today for a Division III sectional championship clash with sixth-seeded Hawken.
Making the buffet of great softball and baseball games so enticing will be a couple Division II sectional semifinal meetings that were set for today all along. Those are both at the Havens Complex in Jefferson. Fourth-seeded Geneva faces sixth-seeded Conneaut at Cotton Field, while third-seeded Perry meets fifth-seeded Harvey at Kidder Field.
There are all kinds of other games involving area teams that were pushed back from Wednesday to this afternoon. Division I baseball postponements find Lakeside traveling to third-seeded Austintown-Fitch, ninth-seeded Madison hosting 12th-seeded Glenville and sixth-seeded Riverside hosting 10th-seeded Shaker Heights in sectional semifinals.
In Division III baseball, fourth-seeded PV heads to a meeting with third-seeded Girard in a sectional championship game, that will start at 4 p.m., according to Lakers coach Steve Urchek.
Madison will visit top-seeded North in a Division I sectional championship softball game.
Other Division II softball matchups today include Harvey playing at second-seeded Lake Catholic and Perry playing at Kenston in sectional championship games.
In a Division III sectional championship, fifth-seeded Grand Valley will travel to Middlefield to face fourth-seeded Cardinal.
