The best things in life are... three.
Well, maybe not really, but as far as the Jefferson Falcons are concerned, the third time will be extremely charming.
For with a victory at Conneaut today, coach Scott Barber’s Falcons, who were the unanimous pick to accomplish a threepeat in the Star Beacon’s annual preseason Coaches’ Poll, can wrap up a third consecutive undisputed Northeastern Conference championship.
“To be honest, we really haven’t talked about it all that much,” Barber said on Sunday night. “I congratulated the guys the other day for clinching a share (with an 11-1 victory against Harvey on Thursday at Cotton Field), but it’s not something we’ve discussed a whole lot.”
Barber, who is 133-60 (.689) in eight seasons at the helm of his alma mater, said the approach of his squad will not be altered tonight, even with a chance to clinch a third straight championship at stake.
“We’ll approach it just like we have every other game,” he said. “It’s not just another game... but it is because our approach won’t change.”
The Falcons (17-4, 8-1) are three games up on second-place Geneva (12-8, 7-4) with three games to play. Jefferson needs only a win in any of its last three games (today Conneaut, Tuesday home to Conneaut and Monday at Geneva) to wrap up another championships.
The Falcons and Eagles were slated to play on Thursday, but first-year coach Justin Cafaro’s fourth-seeded Eagles will be busy taking on sixth-seeded Conneaut in a Division II sectional semifinal at Cotton Field in the Havens Complex that night.
