Softball Roundup: Frye comes through, Hutch fans 23 in win

Star Beacon

Sometimes, heroes, or heroines, come from rather unlikely sources.

On Friday, those heroines arrived for the Lakeside softball team in the form of pinch hitter Megan Frye and catcher Dianna Moore, who has been struggling at the plate. Their heroics in the 12th inning helped the Dragons outlast Chardon, 1-0, to bounce back for a key Premier Athletic Conference victory.

Their efforts rewarded pitcher Christina Hutchison, one of the usual standouts for Lakeside (12-3, 7-2). They made sure her 23-strikeout performance, believed to be the second-highest total for an Ashtabula pitcher behind the 27 recorded by Jefferson’s Kristin Ettinger in 1998 against Edgewood, and the surrender of just four hits, didn’t go unrewarded.

Frye, who was pinch hitting for Taylor Palmer, who had been substituted for Maddy Messner, singled in the bottom of the 12th with one out. Brittany Morrison moved her to second with another single. After Tila Ernst popped out to second, Moore smacked a hit up the middle to score Frye.

“I guess you could say some unlikely heroes came through for us,” Lakeside coach Kerri Weir said. “That was a big hit for Dianna, considering she’s been struggling at the plate.”

Ernst finished with two hits, including a double for the game’s only extra-base hit. Morrison also had two of Lakeside’s nine hits off hard-luck loser Gia Mauer of Chardon (5-11, 3-6), who also went the distance, striking out 11 and walking just one.

“I considered this a must-win game for us for our morale,” Weir said. “That has to be a big boost for the girls. They hung in there, played good defense and then we came up with the big hits we needed to win the game.”
