Published May 09, 2008 02:32 am - JEFFERSON — It’s been a decade since Jefferson won a Northeastern Conference softball championship, but Thursday’s 5-0 league triumph against visiting Harvey —coupled with Geneva’s 1-0 upset of conference-leading and six-time defending champion Edgewood — has put coach Paul Bodnar’s Falcons in position to do just that. Back in the thick of NEC race, Jeff knocks off Harvey Star Beacon JEFFERSON — It’s been a decade since Jefferson won a Northeastern Conference softball championship, but Thursday’s 5-0 league triumph against visiting Harvey —coupled with Geneva’s 1-0 upset of conference-leading and six-time defending champion Edgewood — has put coach Paul Bodnar’s Falcons in position to do just that.
With the Warriors (15-2, 8-2) and the Falcons (14-5, 7-2) even in the loss column, if both teams win out, they would be co-champions. Needless to say, Bodnar was shocked when informed of Geneva’s win against visiting Edgewood. “You’ve got to be kidding me!” he said. “Really... seriously... are you messing with me?” When informed it was true, reality set in. “This puts us at least in control of our destiny again,” he said. “That’s what I told the girls we lost when we lost at Edgewood on Monday (6-0). “Now, it’s back for us to decide our fate.” Jefferson, which defeated Edgewood for the first time in 19 games on Tuesday, 5-0, has three NEC games remaining — at Conneaut on Monday, at Geneva on Thursday and a yet-to-be-determined home game with Conneaut. That game was scheduled for Tuesday, but the Spartans will be busy playing Geneva in a Division II sectional semifinal that day. Edgewood has a home-and-home series with Harvey, the first of which will be played on Monday. The second was scheduled for Tuesday, but will be played on another day as the Red Raiders will be hosting Orange in a Division II sectional semifinal that day. “We’ve got three tough games left,” he said. “I’ve always said, anyone can beat anyone on any given day in this league and I guess it’s been proven true again. “We know that, so our approach won’t change – we’ll take one game at a time.” On Thursday, the Falcons scored twice in the second against the Red Raiders (4-13, 0-8) to basically decide the outcome with Rouzer firing away on the bump. The senior allowed only one hit — a one-out single to right by Sam Mapes — struck out six and walked three to improve to 8-4 on the season. At the plate, Rouzer also led the way, posting three hits, including a double, while Courtney Francis had two hits, including a double, and scored a pair of runs. But the details of the win were certainly overshadowed by Geneva’s victory against Edgewood.
