Two Heralds on All-Ohio team J-Kap, Johnson earn honors in Division IV
Star Beacon
In terms of high school girls basketball, the size of the school most certainly does not matter.
For the smallest school in the Star Beacon coverage area — and one of the smallest schools in Ohio (35 girls in grades 10-12) — has two All-Ohio players.
SS. John and Paul’s Jamie Kapferer and Mallory Johnson were each accorded all-state recognition in Division IV by the Associated Press on Tuesday, with the release of the Division III and Division IV squads.
Kapferer, a 5-foot-10 post player, received special-mention recognition, while Johnson, a 5-7 wing, earned honorable-mention honors.
They join Edgewood senior point guard Katie McMellen and Jefferson sophomore wing Lizzy Ziemski as the only four All-Ohio players in the area. McMellen and Ziemski earned honorable-mention recognition in Division II, which was announced on Monday night.
Kapferer averaged a team-best 16.4 points, 12.4 rebounds (second in the area behind Ziemski’s 14.3), 4.0 steals and 3.8 blocked shots for coach Nick Iarocci’s Heralds. She shot 42 percent from the floor, including a team-best 41 percent from beyond the 3-point arc (29-70).
Johnson was second on the squad in scoring at 14.9 points per game, third in rebounding a 6.2, third in assists at 2.7, third in steals at 3.1 third in 3-pointers with 22. She shot 40.1 percent from the floor and 55 percent from the free-throw line.
Kapferer and Johnson helped the Heralds to a 15-7 record this season and a second-place finish in the East Suburban Conference behind league champion Lutheran East. SJP had posted a 3-16 record in the 2006-07 season.
Kapferer, Johnson and the rest of the Heralds set an Ashtabula County record this season by making 119 3-pointers.
