If ever there was a coach whose life is woven into the fabric of Ashtabula County sports, it’s Annah Haeseler.

  • County squad well divided
With three teams with 16 or more victories and three more in double digits, it was a strong year for volleyball in Ashtabula County in 2009.

  • Kearney district’s top coach
Even though no area teams qualified for the state football playoffs this year, it was still one of the most productive in recent memory, especially in Ashtabula County.

  • Nazor's edge
Through her first three years as a goalkeeper for the Geneva girls soccer team, Jillian Nazor put a lot of pressure on herself. She expected nothing but perfection.

Paying another visit to the variety store...

    One more time
Spurred by the response to the saga of “Tommy and Shirley” being published, a few weeks ago I came to you, Loyal Readers, with the pie-in-the-sky idea of asking you to answer one simple question for me — who or what are you thankful for?

  • Carter’s crew came through
With her team facing its first season as a member of the Premier Athletic Conference, Katie Carter had a simple goal for her Geneva Eagles.

  • Meaney making her mark
The girls on the Edgewood soccer team have become a sort of extension of coach Juli Meaney’s family. She’s been coaching a good number of the Warriors for the last six years, after all.

  • Edgewood, Geneva lead all-county squad
The Edgewood and Geneva girls soccer teams ruled the roost when it came to Ashtabula County.

  • A Steve Goldman column: Eagles were one victory from playoffs
A reader writes to ask why Highland finished ahead of Geneva in Division II, Region 5 despite losing two more games (it had a 6-4 record as compared to the Eagles’ 8-2) and losing their regular-season finale, while Geneva won its last game.

  • A Don McCormack column: ACBF sets some details for banquet

    Mark your calendar
It’s kind of difficult to fathom, but the Ashtabula County Basketball Foundation will be celebrating its seventh birthday in 2010.

  • Charting the course
No matter what, the first person to accomplish something in any endeavor has a special distinction. It is one that can never be taken away.

  • DiPofi a driving force for Eagles
Rome wasn’t built in a day, but look what resulted. A golf program isn’t built in a day, either, but it appears the Geneva girls golf program is off to a flying start.

  • Youth served as girls golf forges ahead
Girls golf in Ashtabula County is still a relatively young enterprise, so it’s not surprising that the makeup of the Star Beacon Ashtabula County team is basically made up of underclassmen.

  • A Don McCormack column: Boys B-ball returning to WFUN

    Radio waves
Joe “Mr. Sports” Pete — aka, The King of Ashtabula County Media — has announced a portion of the high school boys basketball schedule for ESPN 970, WFUN.

  • Outdoors Insider, with Dale Sunderlin: Youth deer-gun season this weekend
Ohio’s youth deer-gun hunting season will be held Saturday and Sunday, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife.

  • A Don McCormack column: It’s the journey, not the end...
The line stretched out the back of the meeting room as went inched our way forward, one at a time.

  • Net gain
There’s but one way to ensure your team doesn’t lose when it comes to the game of soccer.

  • Vice squad
It’s repeated over and over and over again. Defense wins championships. Though the Geneva boys didn’t win a Premier Athletic Conference championship, they were fighting for one on the final day of the regular season.

  • Transition was smooth for Eagles
The Geneva boys soccer team made its transition into the Premier Athletic Conference a successful one.

  • Hoop Shoot heroes
Three boys and three girls, ages 8-13, won the second round of competition in the Elks Hoop Shoot free-throw contest at Lakeside Intermediate School’s Ball Gymnasium on Saturday and have been named Ashtabula area champions.

  • Boring? No more!
Two out of three aren’t bad, according to the song. By that measure, Andrew Bunnell must be doing all right.

  • A stroke of genius by Ellis
Golfers have heard for ages that one drives for show and putts for dough, in other words, the true components of a good round.

  • Experience leads way as seniors dominate squad
To the veterans go the spoils on this year’s Star Beacon Ashtabula County Boys Golf Team.

  • Holding Court
Courtney Thompson’s first tennis instructor was her mother. Years earlier, one of Rhonda Thompson’s teachers had been Arnie Bradshaw.

  • A Don McCormack column: Bruney out for team’s first playoff game
Paying another visit to the variety store...

    Among the missing
Former Lakeside football coach Tom Bruney led Brooke High School to the No. 1 seed in the West Virginia Class AAA playoffs this fall.

  • Get with the program
The more things change, they have said, the more things stay the same. When they said it, they might have been discussing the Geneva girls tennis team’s move from the late, lamented Northeastern Conference to the Premier Athletic Conference. The Eagles, the NEC champions in eight of league’s final nine seasons, capped their PAC debut with yet another conference championship.

  • Eagles, Falcons rule tennis roost
There is no girls tennis match to determine the Ashtabula County champion. Had there been such a match during the 2009 season, it would have been the one played at Geneva on Sept. 2.

  • A Don McCormack column: A time to remember KC
Though he was laid to rest a few weeks ago in Hollywood, Fla., the life of Ken Crandall will be celebrated at memorial service Saturday.

  • Mighty mite Muniak...

Today is a special day, but when you ponder its significance, it’s not nearly as special as it should be.

Do these advertisers all over this screen know that the SB only puts ‘certain’ information on this website and ‘holds’ other information for their precious print edition?

  • Sports Editor Don McCormack's Mailbag -- Continued
    Don,

It is amazing that people only see what they want to see, hear what they want to hear. DO NOT be mistaken that our coach Craig Morgan is an amazing man, doing amazing things for our kids. I will not take this time to slander and throw mud. It is pointless. We are all adults, start acting like it. People are responsible for there own actions. We dont have to throw stones at each other. We are not whiners. We are all very proud of what our children have learned in the last 2 years. My son will never forget stepping onto the field at Lakeside last year and excited to have the chance to return. I will not allow him to participate in the garbage being slung. He only wants to play football!!! But I will say, run your league fairly, by the rules and it leaves no room for question.

BAZETTA TOWNSHIP — The conditions Saturday at the Trumbull County Fairgrounds for the Division II and III cross country racers were anything but hospitable, but area girls not only survived, they thrived.

  • Warriors second to... only one
BAZETTA TOWNSHIP — The best laid plans of mice and men sometime go astray, especially in this season of uncertainty, but fortunately for Edgewood coach Steve Hill, the plan he had worked out for his boys team at Saturday’s Division II district meet was executed to perfection by the Warriors.

  • Perry girls pack a big punch at Lakeland
KIRTLAND — The Perry girls cross country team has been operating under the motto, “The strength of the wolf is the pack.” At the Division II district cross country meet at Lakeland Community College on Saturday, the Pirates did all they could to live up to that sentiment.

  • Beaver boys put it all together
KIRTLAND — It’s all about family for the Riverside boys cross country team — and a family is exactly how the Beavers see themselves.

  • Falcons super in Freeway YFL title game
JEFFERSON — Moving the ball and stopping the other team from doing so is the name of the game in football.

Paying another visit to the variety store...

    Familiar faces
There has been much made of Urban Meyer leading his Florida Gators against the team led by the guy who was his offensive coordinator at Florida until this season — Dan Mullen — in his first year as head coach at Mississippi State.

  • Bollman: No excuses
It’s no excuses time for Ohio State football. After absorbing a 24-16 loss to Purdue last Saturday, the Buckeyes will attempt to get back on track today (noon, ESPN, WFXJ 107.5 FM The Fox) against the Minnesota Golden Gophers, knowing full well that it must get started on that road now.

    Series stuff
Let’s take a look at some historical information regarding the series involving the 10 area teams and their Week 9 opponents:
    n Geneva (6-2, 1-0) at Conneaut (1-7, 0-0) 7 (WWOW, WYBL) — Talk about old friends!

  • Runners have crosses to bear
In the state of Ohio, the northeast district has few rivals when it comes to cross country.

  • Battle of attrition
HUNTING VALLEY — In the game of cat and mouse, the loser is usually the one that tires first.

  • Beavers bounce Blue Streaks
EUCLID — So far, Riverside’s run in this year’s Division I district volleyball tournament has gone pretty much as expected.

  • Warriors win in loss
JEFFERSON — Sometimes, even though the results may not work out in the desired manner, the energy invested in the attempt is equally important.

  • Major Amos B. Hoople: Week 8 — A major disappointment
Harrumph! The only thing worse than playing futileball in bad weather must be playing futileball badly in bad weather.

  • A Steve Goldman column: Eagles’ chances likely to go down to wire
With two weekends of football to play, two area teams rank in playoff position. Let’s take a look at them, as well as the one that was still hanging on going into last week:

  • A Don McCormack column: County 7 still best of the century
Paying another visit to the variety store...

    Hangin’ in there
After four consecutive 3-4 weeks, the seven active Ashtabula County high school football teams slumped to a collective 2-5 mark in their Week 8 contests.

  • Headed to the big top
JEFFERSON — Geneva volleyball team, you’ve just won a Division II sectional championship. What are you going to do next?

  • Take nothing for granted
As the Edgewood Warriors prepare to head to Jefferson and renew their rivalry with the Falcons on Friday at 7 p.m. (WFUN), they do so with one firm belief — the Falcons are better than most people think.

  • Anderson is a Ringer
One of the main reasons for the resurgence of the Edgewood football team has been the play of the Andersons.

Paying another visit to the variety store...

    No surprise
In reading Tom Harris’ excellent profile on former Conneaut multisport standout Stefanie Brown in our Tuesday section, I couldn’t help but just smile and nod my head.

  • Reversal of fortune continues
JEFFERSON — Everybody loves a winner and everybody loves winning.

  • Spartans impeach McKinley
JEFFERSON — Now that it has its feet wet in the Division II sectional-district volleyball tournament, Conneaut has its sights set on even bigger accomplishments. At the same time, the Spartans know there is a lot of room for improvement if they are to achieve those goals.

  • A Don McCormack column: Loyal Readers: Send me your 'Thankful Fors'
One of the many really cool aspects of this job is the interaction with you, Loyal Readers.

  • What can Brown do for you?
As September eased into October, Stefanie Brown was busy preparing for Halloween. There was nothing easy about the pace the 2001 Conneaut graduate kept, however. She was working against a deadline, creating a haunted house at Modern Woodmen Park, the home of the Quad City River Bandits, in Davenport, Iowa. The display was scheduled to be open Friday, Oct. 2, and it was Brown’s job to see that was done properly and on time.

  • Outdoors Insider, with Dale Sunderlin: Every hunter should be on track
As simple as it sounds, every deer hunter should study whitetail tracks. In fact, it’s good to learn to identify all the tracks you see in the woods, from turkeys to bears.

Though they both came out in the short end in their Week 8 contests, the Geneva Eagles and the Perry Pirates would be in the high school football playoffs if they began this week.

  • Heralds live on

  • A Don McCormack column: Meyer a true definition of class

    Special guy
Ashtabula native Urban Meyer is the star of the latest really cool commercial airing on ESPN.

  • Bittersweet 16 for Ford
Jefferson senior Shelly Ford wanted to make her move up the leader board at the Division II state golf tournament Saturday.

  • Small in size, huge in heart
SAYBROOK TOWNSHIP — It didn’t have a spectacular halftime show, although the one it did have was great for local cheerleaders. It didn’t have a lot of pregame hype, but what the Ashtabula Midget Football League Super Bowl did have that many super bowls at the pro level often don’t have was a ton of hard hits and a variety of big plays from players who normally would not make them as the Ashtabula Jets claimed an exciting 14-7 overtime verdict over the Andover Cowboys at Lakeside Stadium.

  • CC Roundup: PV’s Eastlake runs second at Sim Earich

    Super Shelly
Yes, Shelly Ford competing for the second consecutive season at the Ohio state golf tournament is a great story, which we’ve been documenting on these pages this week.

  • Ford takes step up
Jefferson girls golf coach Sara Dean said one of the things she has tried to stress with Shelly Ford, her senior golfer, is to have perspective.

    Series stuff
Let’s take a look at some historical series information regarding area high school football teams in their matchups against their opponents tonight.

  • Help wanted... needed
For nearly 60 years, youngsters in Ashtabula have grown up playing Little League baseball through the generosity of both volunteers and donors.
But in recent years, it’s been more and more difficult for the league to find people willing to give of their time or money and it is becoming increasingly difficult for those running the league to manage.

  • Major Amos B. Hoople: The Major empties his Mailbag!
Harrumpph! This is the time of year I stick my hand in the old mailbag and find out what people have sent me.
Thankfully, with email I no longer get the occasional cow patty from Andover, but some of the correspondence can be pretty interesting, anyway.
Sadly, none of those are fit to print, so you’ll have to settle for the following samples:

  • A Don McCormack column: Kenny had just the ticket for buddy
Paying another visit to the variety store...

    Remembering K.C.
The past few days have been a bit difficult as those of us who knew Ken Crandall try to somehow find a way to come to grips with his untimely passing at age 47 in Florida on Monday.

  • The back nine
It’s go-for-broke week for Shelly Ford. When Jefferson’s senior golfer takes to Ohio State University’s Gray Course on Friday morning for her first of two rounds in the Division II girls state tournament, she will tee off with the knowledge that she can just go into the tournament swinging free and easy.

  • Marsh swamps field en route to being the latest Ringer

The thing about fairy tales is, they tend to focus more on the happy endings than the journeys that were taken to reach those points.

  • A Don McCormack column: About this story...
The tale of Tommy and Shirley, while 62 years in the making in real-life terms — and counting — took longer than it should have to be brought to you.

  • Sports Editor Don McCormack's Mailbag: The readers have their say
    Points aplenty

    Don,

I played for Joe (Chopper) Kearney at Pymatuning Valley from 1976-79.
In our GRC championship year of 1976, we defeated Grand Valley, 76-0.
Please include that in your records.

  • Gone too soon...
The point guard on a basketball team has many responsibilities — making sure the ball gets up the court, distributing the ball to the scorers in the right spots to maximize their performance, knock down the outside shot to keep opponents honest, be a deadly free throw shooter, keep everyone calm in pressure situations and be the conduit for what the coach wants carried out on the court.
