N. Kingsville is awash in red, white and blue

Field of Honor flag display marks five years

NORTH KINGSVILLE — For the fifth straight year, hundreds of U.S. flags wave at motorists traveling Route 20 in North Kingsville.

A small army of volunteers spent Friday morning installing the flags, the Healing Field of Honor that has become a village tradition. The display will be in place through — appropriately enough — Flag Day on June 14.

The display can be found at Greenlawn Memory Gardens a short distance east of Route 193. Several people, working under blue skies, had 400 flags — arranged in perfect symmetry — snapping in the wind before lunch.

Doc Lee of Ashtabula has helped set up the display since it began in 2010. Lee brought five members of the Ashtabula County Young Marines with him to lend a hand. Everyone had a specific task. Some worked in the field, hammering the rebar that would support the banners. Others assembling flagpoles, attached flag to pole or slipped the finished flag onto the rebar.

“We have an assembly line going,” Lee said.

The final step was to tag the flags with names provided by sponsors, said Patti Magada, of Greenlawn Memory Gardens. That task falls to Greenlawn staff, she said. More than 200 of the banners have been sponsored, and more will be claimed before the end of next week, Magada said. After expenses, proceeds are disbursed to various veterans’ groups in the area, she said.

Cost to sponsor a flag begins at $25. For more information, contact Greenlawn at 224-1155. Commemorative hats and T-shirts are available for sale in the Greenlawn office, and proceeds will also benefit veterans’ groups.

American Legion Neal Post 743 in North Kingsville has been involved in the Field of Honor since the beginning, said member Dean Luce. The longevity of the event can be credited to community support, he said.

“After the first year, with the good success, we thought, ‘OK, let’s keep going with it,’” Luce said.

The display opens to the public today and can be visited each day between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. A dedication ceremony will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday. Military groups will be at the display each night for an end-of-day ceremony.

“We have different veterans posts signed up,” Luce said.
