Two people in police custody after meth lab bust in Ashtabula

ASHTABULA — Two people are now behind bars after city police busted a meth lab at a home on Main Avenue.

The bust occurred at about 5:20 p.m. Tuesday after police received a call of suspicious activity in the 5400 block of Main Avenue. When police arrived, they could smell an odor of chemicals coming from the inside while they were looking around outside, Ashtabula Police Chief Robert Stell said.

As officers entered the home, they spotted a firearm and drug paraphernalia in the livingroom, Stell said.

They took two people, a man and a woman, into custody, he said.

In the meantime, a male suspect in the back bedroom of the house tore the paneling off the wall, punched his way through the drywall and escaped through a window in the adjoining apartment, Stell said.

Police are still on the look-out for that suspect, he said.

Upon further investigation Tuesday night, police discovered two methamphetamine-making operations on the premises. Charges of possession of drug paraphernalia, illegal manufacturing of meth, among other drug charges are pending, Stell said.

The Ashtabula Fire Department disposed of the meth labs.

Police say nobody wants to live next to a meth lab, but if you see suspicious activity or smell distinct odors, such as ammonia, acrid chemical fume, or rotten egg sulfurous stink, call the police at 992-7172 and report it.

There also is more than one way to cook meth, but watch out for these chemicals in your neighbor’s trash: acetone, rubbing alcohol, lye, bleach, matches, cold tablets containing pseudoephedrine, batteries and starter fluid.
