Conneaut refuse company begins curbside recycling

CONNEAUT — While Conneaut leaders debate a community-wide curbside recycling program, one local business is already offering the service.

Newhart Refuse Removal LLC, based in Conneaut, added curbside recycling last month to terrific response, said Heather Newhart, who — with husband Dennis — operates the business.

“We began offering (recycling) in response to customer requests,” she said. “It’s really, really been selling. People are calling specifically for the recycling.”

The state is leaning on Conneaut and Ashtabula to begin curbside recycling to help those communities meet minimum recycling requirements. A special committee of City Council, along with Ashtabula County’s Solid Waste District, has met on the issue.

Presently, people who want to recycle must take their items to one of two big bins in town provided by the Solid Waste District. Newhart Refuse’s program is simple: customers receive a green bin along with their trash can, they fill the bin during the week and on pick-up day place it outside along with the can. The Newharts accept most plastic containers, glass bottles and jars, steel and aluminum cans, paper products, corrugated cardboard and paperboard.

On pickup day, garbage and recyclables all go into a special truck fitted with compartments. Behind the cab sit bins for the recyclables, while toward the rear is the trash compactor. Garbage goes to a landfill, while the recyclables are distributed, said Dennis Newhart.

The business began 2 1/2 years ago. Heather is an occupational therapist and owns New Therapy LLC, while Dennis is a truck driver. The couple also get help from son Christopher, a third-grader at Gateway Elementary School.

“We see our recycling efforts as a way to help improve local communities and help local residents become more ‘green’ and take an active role in the helping the environment,” the couple said in a statement.

Newhart Refuse Removal services Conneaut; North Kingsville; northern Jefferson; western Geneva; and Kingsville, Ashtabula, Saybrook, Plymouth and Austinburg townships.
