Tall tales can’t keep Jefferson man out of jail

JEFFERSON — A 23-year-old Jefferson man who was living in an Ashtabula apartment had a difficult time coming up with satisfactory excuses when confronted by deputies about a weekend burglary.

According to a report, the man was a suspect in a burglary at an Ashtabula Township home previously burglarized. A laptop computer and cell phone were discovered missing by the owner Sunday. Two sets of footprints in the snow and the man’s connection to the previous burglary sent the deputy to a West 53rd Street address, where the suspect was believed to be visiting.

Even before being asked about the incident, the subject told deputies “I didn’t steal her computer.” When asked how he knew about the theft, the suspect told the deputy that a man by the name of “John,” who knew the woman, had told him.

When confronted about wearing the kind and size of shoes that matched a set of footprints at the crime scene, the suspect replied that “Wal-Mart sells millions of them.”

The burglary victim told the deputy that she did not tell a man by the name of “John” about the burglary. An arrest warrant was obtained and the deputy returned to the West 53rd apartment, where the suspect told the deputy he could not find his shoes. The suspect was taken to Ashtabula County Jail, where it was discovered that he was wearing two pairs of pants and a syringe was concealed in one of the pairs. The man claimed it was not his pants that had the syringe in them.

An occupant of the apartment later advised the deputy that the suspect’s shoes reappeared — the occupant claimed that a homeless man who collects scrap metal and cans had taken them when he saw the shoes near the trash can, but later returned them. The deputy noted that the trash can was full of cans, casting further doubt on the whole story.

The suspect faces charges of burglary and possession of a drug abuse instrument.
