Geneva schools to provide lunches for Assumption

GENEVA — Assumption School students can look forward to as many as three choices for lunch every school day as the Geneva Area City Schools food service program will be serving their mid-day meals.

The Geneva Board of Education hopes to make some money on the lunch venture, schools director of food service Laura Jones said.

“We have the opportunity to do some shared services at Assumption School,” she said. “We can help another school while increasing our revenue.”

Jones said the district will offer Assumption students four meal choices per day at a cost of $2.75. Assumption will off-set the cost to students by 25 cents, making the school lunches $2.50 per day per student.

“This is an initial, temporary pilot program that would begin in March and go until the end of the school year,” Jones said.

Jones said Assumption has 100 students and averages 23 purchased lunches each day. Right now, Assumption students have one meal offered per day — no choices.

“But I believe that when the students are given more options, there is more participation,” Jones said. “We have to serve 30 meals per day to break even, but at 50 meals per day, we show a real profit. This could help out our bottom line.”

The Geneva food service will also provide 13 adult lunches to Assumption School at $3 per meal.

Jones said she is excited to try the program and hopes the children, and their parents, enjoy more choices in their menu.

“There is no guarantee,” Jones said. “I have never done this, but I see other schools doing it. I am confident we can make this work for both schools.”
