Basic Ingredients building sold, but not the business

ASHTABULA — For 10 years, area shoppers have turned to Basic Ingredients for food, drink and craft items.

As a savvy businesswoman, owner Cathy Lovas also started some much-loved holiday traditions in the community, including an annual visit from Mrs. Claus and a gingerbread house contest.

Lovas said the best part of being a successful businesswoman in Ashtabula is the customers. However, because of health issues with her feet, Lovas has had Basic Ingredients and the building for sale for the past two years

During that time, a couple of people expressed a sincere interest, but could not get financing, she said.

“We had two real estate listings, one selling just the building and the other for both the building and the business together,” Lovas said. “We did this, trusting in God that whatever His plan, His will be done.”

As it turns out, the building has sold, but not the business. The new owner has other plans for the building, she said.

The soon-to-be new owner could not be reached for comment.

“Unless someone steps forward quickly to purchase the business and move Basic Ingredients to a new location, Basic Ingredients will be closing at the end of January,” Lovas said. “Until then, as we wait, we will continue to serve our customers as best we can.”

She hopes her customers will stop in throughout the holidays to do some shopping, and to say good-bye.

Basic Ingredients at 1610 W. 11th St., is open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday - Friday, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
