Geneva gets in the yuletide spirit

Parade lovers enjoy mild temperatures

GENEVA — Relatively mild temperatures made life a little more enjoyable for hundreds of people who jammed downtown Geneva for the annual Christmas parade.

“It’s getting bigger each year,” said Becky Caskey of Geneva. She said she thought the parade was excellent. The idea of the community experiencing the holiday season together appeals to Caskey.

“(I like) the community getting together at the holiday time,” she said.

Dozens of people arrived early to find that special parade viewing spot and captured loved ones in the parade for posterity with cell phone video cameras.

One Geneva Christmas parade tradition did not become a reality as the normally frigid temperatures, usually with snow, didn’t materialize. Temperatures stayed in the mid to high 30s as children of all ages lined the South and North Broadway as dozens of parade units made their way from the old Geneva Elementary school area to the community center.

Many twirling groups participated in the parade as did the Geneva High School band, school groups, fire engines, Boy Scout troops and of course, Santa Claus.

Brandon Bryan brought holiday cheer to the parade by draping lit Christmas lights on his trombone while majorettes and drummers joined him in the holiday spirit.

Justine Snyder led the Excel Twirlers with a burning baton while students from area elementary schools were dressed in a variety of costumes including Christmas presents.

As children waited on the shoulders of parents and grandparents, Santa finally appeared on the back of a fire truck. Jackie Watson of Harpersfield said she liked the Community First float and of course, Santa Claus.

After the parade hundreds of people made their way to the Geneva Community Center where Santa was preparing to see his subjects. A line wound outside the door and 50 yards down the sidewalk as parents and children geared up to see the big fella.
