Popular Ashtabula County doctor Anil Patel dies at age 54

ASHTABULA — The death of popular doctor Anil Patel left a deep hole in the Ashtabula County medical community, according to colleagues and friends.

Patel, 54, suffered a massive stroke on Tuesday and died Friday at Cleveland Clinic.

He came to Ashtabula from his native India in 1992 and built his patient base to 3,000 people. Patel also served as the Ashtabula City Board of Health medical director for many years.

Dr. Ashok Kondru said he came to Ashtabula 20 years ago at about the same time as Patel.

“He always put his patients concerns first,” Kondru said of Patel’s work as an Internist at his office on Lake Avenue in Ashtabula.

“It will take a long time to fill the void,” Kondru said.

Patel served on numerous boards and committees throughout the Ashtabula County medical field including time as chief of staff for Ashtabula County Medical Center.

Patel graduated from A.G. High School and B.J. Medical College in India. He was born in Bavla, India, in 1958 and came to the United States where he completed his residency in pathology and internal medicine residency at Loyola University in Chicago.

Patel is survived by his wife, Lopa, and sons Sohan and Sahil.

“Our community suffers a tragic loss of a great doctor and a sincere friend,” said Ashtabula businessman Larry DeGeorge. He said Patel will be missed by everyone.

Mike Habowski, chief executive officer of Ashtabula County Medical Center, said Patel had a deep love of his patients and his commitment to them was absolute.

“Even after a long day of seeing patients it would not be uncommon to see him late at night (with his patients),” Habowski said. He said the doctor would often come to the hospital at midnight or two in the morning even on days when he wasn’t working.

“Dr. Patel will be sorely missed,” he said.
