Saybrook Township honors Senior Citizens of the Year

SAYBROOK TOWNSHIP — When Lloyd and Judy Richards were named Ashtabula County’s 2013 Senior Citizens of the Year, they were thrilled and honored.

“It’s unbelievable,” Lloyd Richards said during the ceremony, held at Martini’s restaurant last month. “It’s a great, great honor.”

The award recognizes residents who have given their time and talents to programs or projects that have a positive impact in Ashtabula County.

But Lloyd and Judy Richards, 68 and 67 respectively, also have made a positive influence on their neighborhood, specifically Saybrook Township, where they make their home, according to the township’s trustees.

The trustees, Jane Hawn-Jackson, Robert Brobst and Norm Jepson, recently presented the Richards with plaques of appreciation and honored them with a reception at the Saybrook Township Administrative Office. Family and friends joined in the celebration.

For several years, the Richards have taken leadership roles in organizing popular community programs, including projects benefiting the Saybrook Fire Department.

Lloyd actually started in 1960 as a fire cadet and Judy was in the ladies auxiliary in 1965, Brobst said.

“They always gave a lot of time to Saybrook,” he said.

Both are long-time members of the Saybrook United Methodist Church and are very active, volunteering on many committees and organizing fundraisers.

Brobst said, “They have given many years of service to our township and our residents.”
