Suspicious Ashtabula house fire remains under investigation

ASHTABULA — The fire marshal is investigating a suspicious house fire that occurred at an abandoned house on Spencer Avenue Wednesday night.

“We are trying to track down the property owner,” Fire Marshal Ron Deemer said. “The fire is still under investigation.”

According to the Ashtabula County Auditor’s web site, Willie Demore III of Maple Heights, is the owner of the two-story wooden-frame house at 3828 Spencer Ave.

Crews responded at 6:09 p.m. Wednesday to find fire showing from the side window of the first floor of that home, according to the firefighter’s report.

Firefighters entered the house through the front door and found flames in the kitchen, the report said.

The kitchen fire was extinguished with less than 50 gallons of water, but the fire had spread to the second floor and roof, the report said.

Firefighters put out that blaze, as well, and set up fans to ventilate the house.

Capt. Jeff Gianantonio said no utilities were connected to the house and he found the fire suspicious.

The house sustained a total of about $15,000 damage, the fire report said.

No one was injured.

Ashtabula Township Fire Department and the Ashtabula Police Department provided mutual aid.

All departments cleared the scene by 7:44 p.m.
