Boasting gets man jail time

CONNEAUT —  A Conneaut man who last year reportedly boasted about firing a shot at police officers in 2007 faces six years in prison after his comments were captured on video, officials said.

Chad Wright, 40, of Buffalo Street recently pleaded guilty to a felonious assault charge and was sentenced in Ashtabula County Common Pleas Court to three years behind bars, with an extra three years added because a firearm was used, said Police Chief Charles Burlingham.

The incident began in April 2007, when police went to a different Buffalo Street address in response to a 911 call. A shotgun blast came from a third-story window, prompting police to seek cover. A five-hour standoff ensued, during which neighboring houses were evacuated. Wright was eventually captured in the house by members of a Special Weapons and Tactics team and, in June 2007, found guilty of two misdemeanors.

The old case got new life nearly five years later. In July, Wright was in city jail on another charge when he remarked about firing a shot at officers during the 2007 incident, Burlingham said. His comments were captured by a surveillance camera and the footage was given to county prosecutors for review. In September, Wright was charged with attempted murder and felonious assault, and a March trial was scheduled in Ashtabula County Commons Pleas Court.

There is no statute of limitations on such a crime, Conneaut Law Director David Schroeder said.
