Storm cancels, delays classes at Ashtabula County districts

Subzero wind chills and blowing snow combined to cancel classes at two Ashtabula County school districts Friday, while delaying the start of school at other locations, according to reports.

Ashtabula Area City Schools did not hold classes because of the poor weather. Grand Valley, after a two-hour delay, ultimately decided to cancel classes, according to reports. A handful of districts — Geneva, Jefferson and Pymatuning Valley — delayed the start of their day by two hours, officials said.

Strong winds that resulted in drifting snow, white-outs and numbing wind chills continued to plague the area. A handful of traffic accidents were reported on area roads, officials said.

A lake effect snow warning in effect for the area the past two days was scheduled to be lifted early this morning, according to the National Weather Service. Another inch of snow is expected today, with high temperatures in the low 20s. However, winds will continue to be strong, creating wind chills in the 9-below-zero range, according to the NWS.

Show showers are forecast on Sunday, with temperatures climbing into the mid 20s.
