Deadlines for Geneva's Winterfest contests are coming up

GENEVA — The city is getting ready for the annual Winterfest on Feb. 2, but early deadlines for contests and events are coming up soon.

The popular Chili Cook Off returns!

Registration, which is free, must be made by Jan. 30.

“The chili cook-off is one of our biggest events,” Winterfest organizer Andrew White said. “It gets bigger and better every single year. Everyone loves that chili.”

The cook-off is sponsored by the Geneva Area Chamber of Commerce.

Each contestant is responsible for their own chair and must supply a heavy-duty extension cord. Each constant must bring at least three gallons of pre-cooked chili.

Four winners will be chosen: One for a commercial winner, one for a private winner, one for a non-profit winner, and the People’s Choice trophy. Each winner will receive $100 and a trophy, White said.

For more information call 466-5013.

The Geneva Veterans of Foreign Wars will host a reverse raffle and Chinese auction from 5:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. in Feb. 1, as part of the Winterfest activities.

Donations of raffle and auction items are needed to support this fundraiser.

The Winterfest Talent Show was such a success, organizers doubled the time of the event and moved it to a bigger venue, White said.

“It was a phenomenal success last year,” he said. “It was more than standing room only —there were people standing in the doorways trying to watch. We knew this talent show needed to be bigger and better this year.”

The show starts at 3 p.m. on Feb. 2, at the Geneva Community Center. Performers will have three to five minutes to show off their best talent.

It is free to perform at the show, but registrations must be received by Jan. 26.

The event will be organized and hosted by Dan “Hoss” Nugent and winners will be decided by a panel of judges.

The contest will be divided into two age groups — 13 and under and 14 and older. The winner of each group will receive a $50 cash prize. A simple sound system will be provided, but a karaoke machine will not be available.

All that glitters will be showcased at the Miss Winterfest Pageant on Jan. 31 at the Lodge and Conference Center at Geneva-on-the-Lake.

Registration, which costs $25, must be received by Jan. 26.

“The pageant was very successful last year,” White said, “and it became apparent that the girls needed a little more space to perform, so the event was moved to the lodge.

The Miss Winterfest winners will be in the Geneva Grape JAMboree parade and will also be eligible to participate in other festival parades in Ohio.

The contest was open to all Ashtabula County residents and is divided into Tiny Miss Winterfest (ages 0 to 3), Little Miss Winterfest (ages 4 to 7), Young Miss Winterfest (ages 8 to 10), Junior Miss Wintefest (ages 11 to 13), Senior Miss Winterfest (ages 14 to 18), Miss Congeniality and Miss Photogenic.

Pageant Director Christine Harting said she loves pageants and is happy that Miss Winterfest has become a tradition.

For more information, call Harting at 789-0680 or 624-4141.

Applications are available at or at the city administration building on North Forest Street.
