Ashtabula County United Way Bridges & Vines Bicycle Tour was a huge success

The inaugural United Way Bridges & Vines Bicycle Tour was a smashing success, attracting 197 cyclists from across the region.  Participants could join rides of 12, 25, 39 and 62 miles all beginning and ending at South River Vineyards in Harpersfield Township.  Longer rides offered a greater challenge as well as visits to more covered bridges.  Longer rides took cyclists through Jefferson, Kelloggsville, Austinburg and Ashtabula.  Most participants were experienced cyclists who comfortably completed the routes they selected but a good number of people were on their first long road ride and viewed the event as an opportunity to challenges themselves.

United Way executive director Randy Jones says that Ashtabula County is perfect for this type of event.  “We have fairly flat roads with little traffic that pass through a beautiful countryside.  And of course, we have covered bridges and wineries.  Cyclists love a place like Ashtabula County.  We just showed them where to ride”, he said. Jones said that eighty percent of the participants do not live in the county.

Proceeds from the Bridges & Vines Bicycle Tour will support a program to provide free books to preschool children.  The program is a joint effort by Ashtabula County public libraries, the Dolly Parton Imagination Library and the United Way.
