Wine and Walleye Festival huge success for local businesses

The Wine and Walleye Festival was a huge success for local businesses, according to the president of the Ashtabula County Chamber of Commerce, Jessica Forsythe.

“We sold more wine yesterday than the past three years combined,” she said Sunday.

While they fell short of breaking the world record of fish dinners sold, they sold more than 1,000 pounds of walleye. “For me, it wasn’t about breaking the record,” Forsythe said. “The purpose of the Ashtabula County Chamber of Commerce Foundation is to promote the businesses.”

Cones Ice Cream Shop sold more on Saturday than they did in the past three weeks, according to Forsythe.

Fish Commissioner, Joe Misinec said he was very pleased with the festival turnout. “Things are going very well,” he said. “Beautiful weather and great people. I am very happy and very pleased that everybody came out.”

“It’s good to see the people of Ashtabula supporting an event with such a positive attitude,” said Misinec.

Markko Vineyards sponsored the sailboat race from the Ashtabula Yacht Club. Owner of Markko Vineyards, Arnie Esterer, said the festival is good for tourism, “We want more people to start sailing and using Lake Erie.”

Markko Vineyards is donating a dollar for every bottle of their Homage Chardonnay sold to benefit the American Wine Society Educational Foundation.
