Teachers get a head start on students with seminar

ANDOVER TOWNSHIP — Teachers spent Friday in classes designed to help them how they can help students succeed in a changing world.

“Teachers need to be able to stay up to date,” said Pymatuning Valley Principal Dan Jackson. There have been a lot of changes in education, he said.

“There has been a big push in science, technology and math,” he said of new emphasis approved by the Ohio Department of Education. He said students are being prepared for jobs that don’t even exist yet.

“Some of the jobs that pay the most money didn’t even exist 20 years ago,” he said. Many Internet related jobs fit that description, he said.

Teachers had a variety of seminars at the event including an update on a student response system for teachers in Kindergarten to eighth grade.

High School teachers attended a seminar detailing the importance of teaching reading and writing in all classes, not just English.

Mary Barnhart, and educational consultant that worked for the Ohio Department of Education, taught the seminar and focused on pushing students to find “evidence from the text” to best understand the subject matter.

The teacher development day also included a seminar on the new assessments that will replace present testing procedures in the spring of 2015.

“They (the teachers) appear to be very engaged today,” said Donna Timonere, supervisor of school improvement for the Ashtabula County Educational Service Center.

With a changing world Timonere said it is important to provide the education students will need to succeed. She said the state department of education is pushing students to a greater emphasis on math science and social studies.
