Ashtabula 100 and Cristal partner to help at-risk youth

ASHTABULA — A partnership between Cristal and the Ashtabula 100 has created an after-school study table program, which allows disadvantaged high school students from Ashtabula to earn pay-for-play scholarships to participate in interscholastic sports.

The effort, organized and led by members of the Ashtabula 100, consists of a unique after-school, off-campus, adult-monitored study table program at Peoples Missionary Baptist Church.  “If a student regularly attends and achieves a minimum 2.8 grade point average they earn a pay-to-play scholarship,” said Sherry Wilber, community relations manager, Cristal. “We believe this volunteer-driven initiative is worthy because it encourages students to excel.”

“Out of the eight eligible students we had in our study table program last spring, three are playing fall sports,” stated Terry Henton, A-100 board member.  “The football players are Tyree Meeks, Tyler Benson and Malik Carlton.”

“Deserving students who attend study tables and have good grades can now participate in interscholastic sports,” the Rev. Dr. German Womack, pastor of People’s Missionary Baptist Church and founder of the Ashtabula 100 said.  “Because of this effort there are few excuses not to play ball.”

“I can’t say enough about Cristal and their support of the Ashtabula 100 and its mentoring efforts,” said Steven Sargent, director of Ashtabula’s Samaritan House, associate pastor of Hiawatha Church of God in Christ and the chairman of the Ashtabula 100. “We are blessed to have such a strong and thoughtful corporate partner.”

The Ashtabula 100 is a group of like-minded black men from Ashtabula who are collectively engaging and improving the community one initiative at a time.   Currently, the organization is focused on mentoring at-risk youth.
