Authorities search Lake Erie for car in Madison Township

MADISON TOWNSHIP — Madison Fire District and local authorities spent hours Wednesday morning searching for a vehicle that had reportedly gone into Lake Erie.

Just after noon, authorities concluded the report was a false alarm.

Madison Fire District Chief Gene Lutz said they received a third-party call for help from Madison dispatch about 10:10 a.m. Lutz said a Lake County utilities worker reported the matter to Madison’s 911 dispatch, after being approached by an older male claiming to have seen a vehicle in the lake.

“He didn’t say much other than that there was a car in the lake,” Lutz said. “We never could find the original person who reported it.”

Madison Fire District, the Coast Guard, Painesville City and Fairport Harbor used boats and water rescue equipment to search 15 feet off the shoreline in-between Madison Township Park to Countyline Road. The use of underwater radar helped officials determine that there was no vehicle to be found.

“If there was a car in the water, we would have drove right over it,” Lutz said. “We had to go search. We can only go by what people tell us. You just gotta do what you gotta do.”
