Ashtabula County District Library vote close, waiting for final numbers

ASHTABULA — The Ashtabula County District Library additional levy won by a very narrow margin Tuesday.

The unofficial tally was 5,024 votes for and 4,964 votes against — passing the 1.25-mill, 10-year levy by 60 votes, according to the unofficial results from the Ashtabula County Board of Elections.

Library officials are optimistic their win will hold up, but are not throwing a party quite yet.

Final numbers will be ready Nov. 26, said Carol Lovas, director of Ashtabula County Board of Elections.

There are 170 provisional ballots to count, as well as absentee ballots, Lovas said.

“That could make a difference,” she said.

The other libraries with levies on the ballot: Harbor Topky, Kingsville and Andover passed by a larger margin, according to the unofficial results from the Board of Elections.

William Tokarczyk, Ashtabula County District Library director, said it’s a good day for everyone when library levies pass.

“We want to congratulate the Andover Public Library, Harbor-Topky Memorial Library, and Kingsville Public Library on their levy wins,” he said. “And we want to thank all of our avid patrons and supporters for voting in favor of the Ashtabula County District Library.”

Volunteers walked a lot of miles, collectively donated hundreds of hours, and worked very hard to get Issue 37 passed, Tokarczyk said.

“While our victory is with a 60-vote margin, we are confident the final count due out on Nov. 26 will reflect a clear win,” he said.

Ashtabula County District Library Community Relations Coordinator, Debbie Laveck, said libraries are charged with continuing the beliefs of Andrew Carnegie, who donated funds to build public libraries across America:

'A library outranks any other one thing a community can do to benefit its people. It is a never failing spring in the desert.’
