Sidewalk work ongoing in Kingsville Township

KINGSVILLE TOWNSHIP — — A community program to help people walk safely in Kingsville Township will take another step forward later this month.

On Oct. 19, the township’s Spring for Sidewalks committee will continue to unearth long-buried walkways along Route 84 in the township. Volunteers are needed to pull weeds and remove grass that is covering sidewalks along the highway. Workers will assemble at 1 p.m. at Kingsville Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall. Bring tools, including shovels, gas-powered edgers, brooms and gloves.

The sidewalk committee was created last year by Tyler Infield of Infield Chiropractic and Mariana Branch, Kingsville Public Library director. The goal of the group is to improve sidewalks in the township.

“The first step in the process is to uncover the sidewalks to assess what areas need repair and evaluate costs,” Infield said in a statement.

Within the past few months, volunteers have cleaned sidewalks that link the post office at routes 84 and 193 to Kingsville Elementary School, as well as a path  between the post office and the Presbyterian church cemetery. Two truckloads of weeds and grass that covered the sidewalks have been removed since August, according to the statement.

“The goal is to make it safer and easier for all residents of Kingsville to live a healthier lifestyle by promoting fitness through walking,” Infield said in the statement. “It is also important to provide a safe route to school for students who walk to Kingsville Elementary School.”

In May, the committee sponsored a 5K race to raise money for sidewalk improvement work. Another 5K race-1 mile walk will be held May 17.

“The support from the community has been overwhelming,” Branch said. “We had no idea how much interest there was in this project until we planned the 5K race.”
